I'm looking for a cheap HDMI monitor that will display all menus and data that the RED LCD's send out.. so iso, shutter, aspect guides, etc etc. I've read mixed things about this. Does the HDMI signals not display this information into the monitors?

If I understand you question correctly, the answer is "yes." You can send the full menu out the HDMI (or SDI) ports with any monitor.

Thats what I was asking. So you are not limited to purchasing a RED LCD in order to properly use the camera and it's display features.

Well, just to state the obvious, any monitor will display this information but you still need a way to control the camera. So, you'll need a Side Handle or a REDmote (Or a wireless set-up with Foolcontrol or the RED app.)

Mike, not all HDMI TVs/monitors will display the RED data properly. I've had some that just simply mess it up. However, I use a SmallHD DP4 sometimes as my primary on camera monitor and that is able to display it correctly. Something like that is actually a viable alternative to the RED 5.6" monitor. However, then you must power it so that swings the advantage back over to RED LCD as all power and processing is handled by the R1. It's also very light.

And just to correct Terry about the R1, you can control the camera from the body, you don't need a REDmote or side handle (can't use it anyway).

Steve is correct. It usually just takes changing a small setting in the display output. Forgot the name of it. DVI-Out or something like that.

So would the cheap Lilliput HDMI monitors be able to display the display data correctly?

BTW - sorry, I missed the fact that you were specifically asking about RED ONE. I know it works but am less comfortable with the specifics as I haven't shot ONE in awhile.

I'm not 100%, but I'd think they would. If you're ordering on Amazon just try it and if it doesn't work send it back.

The setting your looking for is at System>Monitor>Preview>Menus[DVI]

From the manual....
"MENUS (DVI). In this mode, the HDMI output is compatible with most DVI based SXGA or higher resolution computer monitors. Use is as an external Viewfinder."

This setting works on my SmallHD DP4.

It works only from HDMI, not SDI.

And not every monitor works, I have a expensive SWIT 7" monitor, which does not support the DVI-signal, but my crappy and inexpensive Lilliput does. The SWIT does work on the clean video-out mode, but not in the DVI-MENUS -mode.

So incase you are buying the monitor keep in mind that it might not work and you can return it.

Mikko - what Lilliput monitor do you have that works with the R1?

could you give me the model number? i could try to find it used.. unless you think the newer models would work as well.

I know the menus aren't enabled through the sdi outs, but has anyone gotten a monitor to display regularly through sdi, and have the menus out on hdmi. I have a smallHD Dp1x and an Ikan Vx7e. They both work on the hdmi with the dvi option. I'm hoping to get the menus out of dvi but still use the sdi out even without the menus.
