Looking for DP for Music Video

Hi Sean,

Alicante sounds good, but are there any gifted actresses/actors available of
film.schools ?

Hi Stefan,

Yes there is a great film school right next to the film studios and a really good local agent, we could run the castings for you here no problem...

I will upload some reels for you to look at later today (Sunday)

Best

Hi again Stefan,

I've noticed some fairly negative posts which seems a little silly.. I only deal in the positive.

We all know the beauty of the RED is that the costs can be kept down and the workflow is easy and very cheap (no telecine, scanning etc, just plug and play!

You can get flights to Alicante for next to nothing even in August, accommodation for next to nothing too. Which leaves most of your budget to spend getting the absolute best for your promo.

I forgot to also mention that our other DP Robert Binnall http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0083045/ may also be available, he is mainly a features camera operator moving up to DP but you will see by his CV he that is very well qualified.

I am just uploading some links to our reels which I will post/email you when they are up.

One last question when you say 5-10k do you mean dollars or Euros? Obviously it makes quite a difference.

Sean

You've got a director, right?
Hahahaha..Funny as hell!

I am not looking down om your budget, in fact I have shot over 100 music videos in no/low budget range(€10-20K equivalent) in the early 1990ties. Many of them on less than 5 rolls of S16. Just saying that $5K today is close to nothing.
I did one last week with that budget(5K), as a favour to one of my freinds, but I made sure that all of the crew(3) where paid close to proper wage, wich in turn meant, that I, my camera ,the editor, his computer, and everybody else involved worked for nothing.
Owning a REDpackage and a set of good lenses made this a hell of a lot easier.
I can see why somebody hungry for showreel material would be interested.
I do spec spots a couple of times a year, if the script is good and the director is top notch or a promising newcommer.
If you can travel with that kind of budget and make a top professional product, more power to you(and less money to them).
I hope you end up with something nice, and a good experience...

Seems to me that cheaper videos is just part of the writing on the wall.
My last music video was in the sub $20k, and it was for Dave Matthews! His album is 3rd on Billboard with I believe about 88,000 sold... much lower than those days in the 80s and 90s when videos had much bigger budgets!
Content is in higher demand, but that doesn't mean there's more money for it. How many records have you bought at full retail lately? Maybe download a single, or get a copy from a friend, but the amount of people watching a video and then turning around and buying a $20 CD because of it is next to none. These just aren't those days anymore. Just be realistic and get what you can get till the sun comes out again.

I'd be glad to shoot your video, I'm based in Virginia, but in August I'll be here, Bonneville, Stugis (Badlands Bike Rally), and Las Vegas too- so take your pick!

Thanks for this comment. Many DPs aren`t aware of this fact, that revenue streams of music-labels are getting smaller and smaller....

Hi Sean,

that`s a good question. Originally we`ve meant USD, cause of the stronger EURO ,there`s still money left for flight and accomodation for the artist + you get in
US most of the time a good talent-pool...
But the overall budget for the whole production counts :
If we have to
pay less in Alicante for location or other things we don`t mind to pay in EURO.

Cheers from Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I have put Chris's Showreels (Part 1 and Part) on youtube for you. They are low res for speed but you will see how well shot and lit they are even at this resolution. Although there is a lot of commercial work in the showreels please pay particular attention to the music video at the end of Chris Showreel part 1. and generally to the lighting etc.

They are also now on our server so you can download them if you wish.

Here are the links:

I also noticed your comment about record labels having limited revenue's and I am producing an $80m budget movie directed by Vic Armstrong http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002184/ and we are currently actively looking for music/songs for the film so I would be interested in hearing your artist and any other material you may have?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers

Sean

Thanks for this comment. Many DPs aren`t aware of this fact, that revenue streams of music-labels are getting smaller and smaller....

I don't think it's so much that, as it is that you don't want to stand and do something for no pay and just get shit for it.

I just recently directed a video with a $25K budget because it was interesting and the idea was intriguing (since they let me come up with it from scratch). During production the record company demanded to see CW and book from the stylist and showreel from the editor??????

What is wrong with that picture? Well to start with, they didn't get paid. All the money was going into production, so we could make the video.

For me the problem is that beggars can't be choosers doesn't seem to exist in the music business even though they don't have the budgets. Video Commissioners are still trying to pretend to be professionals, even though they're fresh out of high school and literally have no budget to play around with.

I remember standing in 2003 and being told how to light the artist by a Video Commissioner. I told him that I would do as he says, but I wouldn't use my light meter anymore. He shat his pants when he saw I was actually meaning it (I of course knew exactly what the exposure would be using a disgusting ring light hahaha). This was on a 14 hr day deal with a lot less pay all together including recce day then I would normally get for one 10hr day. That's when I realized that music videos sucked and I've done very few since then hahahaha.

I've been revisiting the music video side of things lately to see if there's anything interesting out there, now that they don't have money. If there's any good, bold ideas worth watching and I have to say most of it is crap.

Most of the DPs I know, are acutely aware of this!!!!
And I feel soooo sorry for all the labels and their R&A poeple, that where just sitting there waiting for something good to happen up trough the last 3 decades.
Now that they have slept soundly thru-out the internet revolution, they have been whiining like little children, that somebody stole their candy.
They failed to evolve as a business and be innovative towards the new ways of distibuting music.
They should all be on their hands and knees for iTunes, because without that they would almost all be closed.
They deserve all the crap videos they are getting(as if they could tell the difference), while they are sopping in to their cheap chardonnay.
That business is one of the slowest-to-adapt-least-loyal-most-bullshitting, I have ever come across.
There are off cause exceptions but thats usually an estaplished artist paying most of the bill.

Might as well suggest Dubai, Ill be away in august, but there will be other people, plus 2 full kits and post facilities ready to go. You just need to be able to cope with the heat.
