ok, movie fans...name one of those movies, preferably famous, where the protagonists try to drive away or run away from the haunted house to escape from it, but end up right back where they started from, in front of the haunted house. Try as they might, they can't escape this loop.

I know I've seen this motif a buncha times. But I need a specific reference. I know they're out there! Preferring a classic reference, but will accept all comers.

Thanks!

I keep thinking Dementia 13 - but that doesn't seem quite right...does this happen in Dementia 13?...been a long time since I've seen that one...

The Abandoned has this motif...but I'm still in search of a classical Hollywood black and white film. A couple gets in a car to drive away, drives all around and ends up right back in front of the haunted house. The house refuses to release them from its grip.

Anyone?

"Dead End" is close to that. A family takes a short-cut home on Christmas Eve but no matter how far they drive they keep ending up in the same place.

More like a long "Twilight Zone" episode than a h:emote_22_yikes:rror film, one might even call it a dark comedy. Smart dialog, dumb ending. Unusually good character development and acting by Ray Wise, Lin Shane (nicely underplaying compared to her usual roles), and Alexandra Holden (I really thought she'd be getting bigger roles after I first saw this one).

or one part near the end of In the Mouth of Madness, where the protagonist tries to get away from the fictional town of Hobs End, leaving the manuscript, but the author won't let him leave.

This triggers a memory of a Twilight Zone episode where a man (the guy who played Paul-the-investigator on "Perry Mason") drives into a small town and the friendly citizens simply won't let him leave. Finally he finds his car, a 1957 Ford Fairlane convertible, and races out of town. He hits an invisible wall, (tears up a perfectly beautiful car) and wakes up in the hospital where the super-caring citizens all drop by and let him know that they are always going to be there taking care of him... just killin' him with kindness.

Rod Serling (same breath) Alfred Hitchcock.

The Matrix Revolutions_ Neo Runs down the train track one direction and winds up right back at where he started.
Runs out frame right runs in frame left camera doesn't move

Silent Hill :) Although I cannot remember if he tries to leave in the movie, as in the game, you can never seem to leave.

If memory serves correctly, The House on Haunted Hill (either version) has this or at least something similar. In an abstract sense, Lost Highway and maybe also 1408.

In the movie, the mother tries to leave and (seemingly) successfully does so. At the very end however, she walks into her own house - sits down next to her husband - while the rain pours down and sees nothing but mist all around her and her little girl playing around as if nothing was wrong -- presumably hinting at the fact that "you don't ever leave Silent Hill".

The games are different in that respect, but you do actually "sort of" leave Silent Hill in SH: Shattered Memories. But then again, that's a memory so...:emote_22_yikes:

Great topic

James Mangold has that circular thing going on in "Identity"

This happens at the end of "The Descent".

:SPOILER:
The protagonist finally escapes the cave and starts driving away. All of a sudden it turns out that it was just her imagination and she's still in the cave.
