Hi there- I am looking for some tips on how to use LOOKS effectively.
The problems I have encountered with it thus far are these:
1.) When working in a custom look space, where does it say on the LCD that I am working in a custom look? I don't think anywhere, so it is unnerving to think that I am not working in a custom look space.....
2.) When working with a custom look, what is the deal with metering? Does the false color show the values of the look? or is it of the REDCOLOR image / data?
3.) The item "CLEAR" in the Camera > Video> Look menu; I see the need for having this available when creating custom looks in the camera, but what about the addtition of "Default RC" (Redcolor) . If this were present, then the process of notion of having to "Clear" would abate, as the term implies that one is wiping the look from the menu / SD card.
4.) ISO. Here as well I encountered something buggy- I created a look in REDCINE X, and assigned an ISO of 500. When I imported the look in the camera, it remained at 500. Then I 'cleared' the look (in other words wanted to see what the default, redcolor look was like, then "re-imported" (is this a misnomer? am I not applying it? If it is imported into the camera, should I be able to remove the SD card while this is applied....don't know) the look I called up was correct, except the ISO was 320 all of a sudden.......
5.) Labeling and identifying of looks.
At some point, I would like to see a folder system in which one could create Categories of looks and in fact, I think it would benefit RED to include an SD card with custom looks with the camera, ie BLEACH BYPASS, MONOCHROME, DESATURATED, ETC....surely this would encourage Cinematographers to delve further into the subject and start expanding on a great feature of this camera.
6.) I see looks as very important in the shooting process. I think it would be great if there were more tools available in REDCINE X to hone this feature.
If I could COLORIZE for instance, when shooting in B&W, I could add a color to the black and white image to create a chocolate / bronze effect with ease.
Needless to say, an easy way to achieve this so the Director and all concerned would be able to see fairly precisely what the image is going to look like would be awesome.
7.) Another thing I find unusual is that when the MX sensor was shipped to me, the camera booted up at 800 ISO. When I 'clear' my look, the ISO resets to 320 ISO. Is this the normal ISO for REDCOLOR/ RAW? Where does the 320 rating come from?
8.) STATUS. This is great to have this available to check all the settings in the camera, but I think it would be excellent to see an additional page that shows all of the Look Settings applied.
9.) Lastly, in REDCINE X, if there was a LOOK MANAGEMENT Dialog box, then one could work on a variety of looks, save them and make changes to them. I wonder as well if changes could then be made in camera, saved to the look folder, then when brought back in to REDCINE X, a notification would pop up saying something like" Changes were made to the Look File: PROFILES>DESATURATED LOOKS> HI CONTRAST 2: would you like to update this look or reset it to your previous settings?
Well, there's a lot here- please pipe in with your experiences with this process.
Many thanks,
Jason
