  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Look For Sachtler Video 18p

IMO the Video 18, 20 & 25 ( same size quick release plate) do not work very well with the RED dove tail ...
i suggest you try one with a Red before you buy ...

you simply need to go big in the tripod department, minimum would be a 9+9 or better! or an old 7+7, they were the industry standard for years before o'conner made the 2575 etc. once you add all the gear, monitors filters, FF, drives, and especially any kinda zoom etc your going to need some big guns

Donatello,
We are wondering what you mean exactly with the Sachtler tripods not working well with the RED. Is it only when you have the dovetail on the RED? 100% of what we do will be shop from a tripod, so with that, should we still could Sachtler out?

Does anyone else have experience with a Sachtler 20p and a RED?

yes, using dove tail ... but even using the Red cheese plate it doesn't sit on the full top plate of the scahtler ( see middle photo) ...

since then i have removed the 2 rubber pads on the sachtler quick release and now the camera will sit on the full top of the sachlter - plus i had to put some tape on one end of the cheese plate to get it to be solid ...
but in the end i have to ask why do i have to do all this to get it to sit solid on the sachtler ... do not have the problems on a Oconner 1030 ...

I found a used sachtler video 18p on web for a solid price. It was meant to be used with my upcoming red, however after reading this discussion I amnot sure anymore....what would you suggest...can sachtler fit any base plates that could match nicely redone....what are your suggestions..I wouldn't want to spend a small fortune on a tripod and fluid head only to relize it doesn't fit fully my redone...thanks in advance for an input

Hi Jason...I am wondering the exact same thing...Can sachtler 18p suffice for red camera....and what about its base plate and red cam compatibility?

The problem with these small heads are that for prime lens work, they should be OK with minimal accessories. I weighed my rig fully built with prime lens at about 35 pounds. Now a zoom lens other than the 18-50 would not work on the video 18 and maybe not even the 1030HDS. That is where the big guns are needed.

HI Steve,

Could you suggest something from sachtler, that is enough rock solid to support the red one package with 18-50 lense...what kind of tripod redone package will your rental company prepare to go on field?...please name a few options...thanks

If you want a sachtler, the older studio 2 was a workhorse and can be used for all situations pretty much. I don't use them anymore but I have a couple still in stock that I may want to sell. If you are just gonna use the 18-50 Red Zoom, you may be able to get away with the Video 18. I usually rent the Oconner 2060 or 2575 with an occasional 1030S (not 1030B) for lighter set-up.

The Sachtler video 18 is rated for about 44 pounds which is kind of pushing it for a fully rigged package. The video 20 would better suit you as it is rated at 55 pounds. I have a video 20 and am planning to use it with my RED set up. I'll know fairly quickly if it will handle the load but unless I'm incredibly loaded to the max, the video 20 should handle most situations.

I am hoping that the Sachter 18 does the job as that is the head that I just bought. I think it depends on what type of shooting you are doing. I do a lot of solo stuff where I want to be as streamlined as possible, thus the 18. But I haven't tested it yet so the jury is still out. If anyone has tried the video 18 with a loaded Red and had it bonk on them, it would be great to get that feedback.

I agree...let's hear some feedback...I'm considering sachtler 18p....coz it would fit both my needs...I could use it with small camera and letus adapter as well as occasionaly shooting with red...because it's payload is from 3-18kg...it seems like an ideal tripod...so hearing some real life feedback would mean a great deal to me...coz I am on the verge of buying one...I would be using a very basic redone package with redone, zoom 18-50, rods, follow focus, matte box, battery and mounted disk...

Drazen,
Thanks for that link. Sounds like the video 18 held up just fine with a pretty decent load on it. Good news since I have the same one. I was sweating a bit with some people saying that the 18 wouldn't cut it but the real world feedback seems to say otherwise. Thanks again for tracking down that info!!
