  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Long shooting days with the Komodo

I own both the OG Komodo and a Sound Devices MixPre-6 II.

All you need to do is run the 3.5mm stereo out from the MixPre to the 3.5mm audio input on the Komodo and you're in business.

Set all of your levels appropriately so that the MixPre is doing all of the heavy lifting and functioning as your pre-amp, instead of relying on the Komodo's built in audio features. Then remember to hit record on both of them and Bob's your uncle. Go out and shoot!
Is there any advantage to this setup to, say, running a few Tentacle Track E units (or Deity recorders) and a timecode box jamming into the Komodo?

The MixPre-6 is arguably a better recorder than those other options but probably not dramatically. The advantage might be that you'd have audio direct into the Komodo so you wouldn't need to worry about syncing later. But if you're already running timecode then it's not a big deal to sync everything in post.

Thanks a lot!! Yes now I'm going to try to figure out how to have some sort of button to do the simultaneous run/stop

I use my OG Komodo for all day long interviews all the time.

Video: ELQ on 2x 512 GB Cfast2 cards works lovely.

Audio: MixPre 6 II recording onto a USB with AUX out straight into the cam A Komodo's mic in, recording on 1-2, with 3-4 for the on-camera mic for scratch/reference/backup. Mics are usually a combo of Deity Theos uni lavs on talent, and a Rode NTG5 shotty on a boom.

Sync: I run Deity TC-1 boxes (one per camera, one on the MixPre) which sync with my Deity smart slate which is all run thru the app on my phone. The external timecode plus the internal audio recording back each other up. If I can just use the camera's recording of the MixPre, great, but the MP is doing 32-bit float and I'd rather work with that. The rest is a backup and a sync backup in case timecode doesn’t work, which is also why we always slate and clap.

ELQ is OK for talking heads? I did some test on landscapes the other day and there was definitely some weird stuff going on in the details (leaves, etc.)...

yes with a high detailed shot ELQ can start feeling “crunchy” particularly below 5K res.
Even with some of the slight artifacts ELQ still seems pretty on par with codecs like AVC Intra and variants etc found in other cameras.

I think ELQ can work fine with most talking heads particularly if you have a blurred background (which is common)
But be mindful if talent has detailed clothing or other high detailed patterns in the frame.

For 6K and 5K on Komodo LQ works very well and to me handles whatever is in the image.

I have also shot many, many an interview on ELQ, mostly just to save me the hassle of switching cards and managing media on small crew stuff. But the image quality hasn't let me down at that compression level.
