  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there any way of overriding the 1fps and set an exposure of 30 seconds to do a timelapse of stars?

The red uses an electronic shutter. The maximum exposure duration is 1/2 second. You can use frame averaging modes in which the camera makes up to 16 half second exposure and combines them into a frame. In these modes you can see the movement of star fields.

Not quite. I've used this mode, you should try it the results are impressive.

:)

Well

you won't see into deep space but you can see stars moving over long time lapses.

For any long exposure work, frame averaging is the way to go. It gives you the longer exposure you want, but it also significantly drops image noise allowing vastly higher ISO without significant penalty. If you're doing a 16 frame average, shooting at ISO6400 looks as noise free as you could want.

Agreed. I tried frame averaging for the first time a few months ago and it was spectacularly clean.

Just make sure you black shade for 1fps first to get the best results.

Can you post image examples to show this feature off?

Dragon LLO OLPF. I'm stopping down to get the DOF I need for the shots, so that's why I'm using the averaging mode. It works better than even a perfect long exposure as it doesn't just ensure enough integration time to make the correct exposure, but also drastically lowers noise. Most shots there are ISO3200, the darker ones ISO6400.

Absolutely! I've used it for stills, but it works for motion too. I've not had the chance to experiment with that, so if you do, provide us feedback please!

I've done some frame averaging with motion and short bursts. You can not record sync sound.

As I recall if you average 2 frames at 12fps, you end up with a 24fps motion stream. One little used mode for better compression in slomotion is burst mode. Doing this you can obtain 100 frame bursts at say 3:1 compression at 48fps for example.

But it back to averaging, you do get s bit of motion blur issues because it's taking two exposures. I've used it for tabletop stuff. But sometimes it's better to use burst mode and just record the higher compression as an alternative.

Graeme, would it be possible to turn sound on in averaging mode?

Question, I’m trying to use the time laps setting and frame averaging I’m at 1 FPS and 360° but when I go to frame averaging or summing the only option I have is 2 frames all the other numbers are grayed out. I’ve gone through every setting to try to fix this. I even did a factory restore and still get the same results. Anyone know what could be causing this? Oh, this is on a DSMC2 Helium with PL mount and Zeiss 15mm CP.3 mounted.

Thanks,
Chad

The 8k cameras are limited to 2 frames for averaging and summing. The others go up to 16.

OMG, seriously? I didn’t read that anywhere in the documentation. so even if I drop down to a lower resolution it won’t make a difference? Thank you SO MUCH for telling me this. I was going crazy trying to get this to work.
