I've never used an anamorphic on my Scarlet yet, so I'm curious if anyone else has had experience with them, especially Lomos (or Hawks). I know there's no ANA setting but is all of the image info there on the sensor, just stretched or something? Does the regular 4K instead of 4K HD help a little with that. I can reframe in post, no problem there but I'm just wondering, from a shooting stand-point, does the lack of ANA setting kill the ability to use them on a Scarlet instead of an Epic? Or, it just kinda looks 'funky' on the monitor while shooting?

ev shipard shoots on Scarlet with Ana - maybe drop him a PM.

You're simply recording a 2X image on a 16:9 sensor - so you'll get the trendy 'super widescreen' (ie the latest Taylor Swift video etc) look if you then correct the A/R.

If you want, you can then crop to get a more traditional widescreen ratio.

Shooting wise, just send out a monitor signal to a HD monitor with a 2X squeeze, if you need to see a corrected image for framing... or set some custom guides for your squashed image.

Basically, its the same as the DSLR crowd - except you can use 4K rather than the HD they're limited to :)

There are a few threads around about this - you can probably get some info from these threads:

Awesome, thanks for the help. I'm still trying to decide if I should just use these on a music video shoot or just get some Cookes or an Angie.

Epic has an ANA mode, so you essentially only need to desqueeze. With Scarlet you need to crop from 3.55:1 down to 2.4:1, which basically cuts you down to using like 2.5k of the sensor.

@ Mike with with Alexa @ 2k Rez. in Ana mode .......................doesn't Scarlet have resolution to burn ?

Yeah it does... I was comparing to Epic though, which has an ANA specific mode which uses more of the sensor.

Epic ANA is (I think) 3296x2700 active pixels (which is actually 2.66 and gets cropped to 3240x2700 for 2.4)
Scarlet cropped ANA would be 4096x2160 = 3.55:1, which then gets cropped to 2.4 and ends up using ~2592x2160 active pixels...

The interesting thing, and what everyone is chomping at the bit for, is that 3296x2700 = 8.9mp a frame, while 4096x2160 = 8.85mp/frame which the scarlet can do at 30fps.... So a lot of Scarlet users are wondering why we can't have a 5k ANA at 24fps mode, since it seems to be essentially the same data throughput as a 4k 1.9:1 at 30fps. Same with 4.5k (which is 4480x1920 = exactly 8.85mp a frame).

Check these out -- it's 2x ANAs on a Scarlet without cropping the sides to make it proper 2.4:1:

same with this:

I think they're both LOMOs too...
