  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The telescoping rear element on the square fronts makes the lens too deep for shallower mounts with internal ND's like the Alexa Mini or Amira. I know people shoot Alexa Mini with Lomos all the time, so what's the work around for this?

what Lomo's are these? theres a lot of different kinds. Any lomo I have ever used the Telescoping is in the front not the back.

do you have a video of the telescoping ? how far out of the back does it go?

I went to test my set on an Alexa Mini a while back and the 80mm wouldn't fit deep enough into the camera to lock the PL mount.

This post prompted be to take a look at the lens, and it does indeed telescope out while it focuses by a few mm... Never knew that before and it's never been an issue on any other camera.

I most probably had the lens set to infinity when I went to mount it on the Mini, which is when the lens extends the furthest. Not sure if it would mount properly when set to minimum focus (which would be handy for close-ups).

Try to set the lens to min focus distance, and then try to mount it.
But be double cautious reaching near infinity cause the lens deepens toward sensor and can scratch you internal ND.

Here you can see LOMO squarefront anamorphic 50mm draft. The oks1-50-1 spherical lens unit is marked blue, and it is indeed goes back and forth when focusing.

Is yours named BAS4-15?

12 and 13 are the multithread tubes which focus the optical unit of oks1-50-1.
When you move 16, the geared focus ring, you move 4 (the 2nd component of ana) and the oks1-50-1. They are both connected to the ring 16

never seen this kind of LOMO before I guess you cant use this type of lens with alexa? or can you ? these lenses were made in the days of film cameras and they didn't make them to hit the shutter of the camera I would think?

there are other LOMOs that dont do this so maybe you saw people using those kind.

These lenses were designed for the Soviet OCT-18 and OCT-19 lens mounts which have a longer flange focal distance than PL. So not surprising that there may be clearance issues. If I recall correctly, the newer Round Front Lomos were much easier to convert to PL than the old Square Fronts. Perhaps this was part of the issue?

never seen this kind of LOMO before...
Martin, it seems to me that mainly all NAS and BAS types (squarefront) use dual focusing system for both the anamorphic attachment and spherical lens unit. So the lens at the back moves.

It is different with the later BAS types, where you only focusing the whole piece by just one front component.

Satsuki is absolutely right, OCT-19 has 61mm flange focal distance which is way deeper than PL, 52mm FFD.

The OCT-18 (just a tube, not a bayonet like OCT-19; looks like Arri standart mount) has 57mm FFD.

Hey Ilya, welcome to the forum!

Thanks for sharing, where did you find this draft?

Do you have other drafts like these of sqarefronts and especially some of the roundfronts too?

I'd love to have a peek, I'm a lens nerd he he,
and I'm under the impression I'm not alone here! ;)

Thanks!!!

I'd also love to see some more of these high quality draft images. Especially one for a 35mm squarefront model ГОСТ 9040-69 if you have it?

Thanks!

Hi there, dear Tommaso:-)

I think I had read your posts here since maybe 2009 here:-) Glad to get in touch now when I have smth to say and share:-).
I have just checked your personal site, liked the colors at MIPA pages much.

The draft is just from little user manual of BAS4. It is in Russian so you can hardly get smth useful from it.

I will try my best to share LOMO and Russian glass here^-)
I simply love em too.

So let's start the bombing!

Never published before super geeky pages of true lens porn here! No bullshitting, guys, a GEM:-) Feel free to share, I myself scanned all these, copyright free.

What is really unique in this NIKFI lens test Catalogue is that lenses from East and West were tested using the same standard procedure.
That is very rare, guys, even nowadays (with the notable exception of Roger Cicala of LensRenstals).
So you can truly compare apples to vodka.

The first PDF has anamorphic cine lenses tests - NAS, BAS, Satec and Cinepanoramic. it is from NIKFI Catalog of 1969 (with text layer, copy and Google translate):
http://goo.gl/chQ6bJ

Second, specially for Tommaso, roundfronts tests and schemes!
There one can have is anamorphic LOMO cine lenses TESTS - roundfront BAS and TELE from NIKFI Catalog of 1973 (with text layer).
http://goo.gl/vAzGa8

Third, here is a couple of roundfront BASes against Technovision ana from NIKFI Catalog of 1978 (with text layer).

Well, I now see G-translate could be shitty enough, so use this pic in English as a key to Russian schemes from above .pdf's:

And in case you have some spherical optics:

Ryan, that line of ГОСТ is not a name of a lens, it is just a State Standard for tech stuff.

Write me other model name text, please. It should be smth like 35NAS or 35BAS4-10 etc

Whoops, my bad, that's the only writing on my 35mm. Comparing it to photos of other lenses, it looks like it's probably a 35BAS 10-2-01 ?

Thanks again Ilya,

I'm really happy to read all I can about Lomos!

What do you know about JSC Optika Optar 35mm lenses?

I have a 18 28 35 50 75 superspeed set and I really like these lenses.

Optically are quite good and their aperture blades design is inspired by Cooke design and coincidentally the lenses have a similar feel in some instances.

That is strange, there should be the name, take a thorough look, it could be on any side, even painted black;-)
So you compared your 35mm ana to the image of BAS10 from the first pdf above and they look similiar? I find it difficult to identify your lens that way cause the pics are awful in my copy;-(

Tommaso, you are welcome!

Well, you know, there is a popular confusion about Illumina and Optar brands.
Optar Illuminas are 90-s s16 superspeeds made by KMZ, Moscow.
Illuminas are mid 2000-s 35mm superspeeds by LOMO.

Why do both have Illumina in its name?
It is because of the person behind, the man who ordered the production of the both lineups, was Gregory Mirand, born in Tajikistan, USSR, graduated from LIKI in 1972, St. Petersburg.

Whilst JSC OPTICA, St. Peterburg, is known for Elites, 16mm, 35m, anamorphic, zooms etc.
You can find Elite superspeeds 35mm in brilliant SALT tests here on RU, you for shure saw it:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...igh-Speed-Lens-Shootout-quot-WFO-quot-Results

I myself had zero experience with them, Tommaso. Experience wise I just personally know the chief of JSC Optica, Grigoriy Romashkin, a nice guy to have deal with;-)
He sold me 1600mm optical bench collimator for the optical workshop I am building now in Moscow.

How do your Elites look like? You know, there were MKI, II etc...Like these?:

Google Photo album of Elites here https://goo.gl/sC8c44

Generation wise, they are all based (but not copying) on the late 80-s and mid 90-s genuine superspeed designs of CKBK (NPO EKRAN in 90-s), soviet chief institute for optical and cine equipment.
JSC Optika is successor of Ekran.

— to say more, Elites have barrels design that looks like Cooke ones:-) Moreover, internal mechanics on both use cam-type focus and iris gear mechanism.
I could be wrong, but it also seems that some version of Elites have much more robust and reliable ball-bearing cam-type focus mechanism than some Cookes.
