For sale is an extremely rare LOMO Square Front Anamorphic 30mm T3.3 (f2.8). That’s right, a 30mm! Based on the serial number, it was built in 1965 (650002). The lens was converted to PL mount. The lens was then completely overhauled by Focus Optics. When I got the lens back, I couldn’t believe how good the image was. I don't always include images shot with a lens I'm selling, and I never include images from the lens projector, but I just couldn’t help it. I still can’t believe how good the image is coming out of a 55-year-old anamorphic lens! It’s hitting 200 line pairs! I was going to put a set of Square Fronts together, but I have to change plans. This lens will be an amazing addition to a set of LOMOs, which typical don’t go wider than 35mm. As I said the image is sharp. The flares are classic LOMO: blue streaks and ghosts.
Optically, no haze or fungus, which is amazing considering the age of the lens. There are no deep scratches, cracks or pits. However, there are some light cleaning marks on the rear element, and some coating degradation on the front element. As you can see form the images included, these issues are purely cosmetic and don’t affect the image. I shot against windows with the morning sunlight pouring thought them, and the lens handled it no problem!
Mechanically, the lens is on good shape. As I said, I just got it back from a full service. Focus and iris rings are turning smooth.
Cosmetically, it’s got some wear from 55 years of use. The color of the anodizing has shifted a little in some areas, as is common with old LOMOs. The engravings are still easy to read.
This is a great little lens: small, light-weight, sharp, super wide angle, and full of character. The flares are awesome. The oval bokeh and barrel distortion is classic anamorphic. I am sorry to let this one go, so I really hope it finds a good home.
I have a lot more photos, happy to email them to you.
