Hi,

Whilst $30,000 for a set of Standards that would have had no takers at $7,500 two years ago is OK?

These are optically good lenses. These are housed for a Temp, or Konvas camera. They have no gears, and relativley short focus throws for cine lenses. They should perform well on the red. You are going to be buying them from a seller/location where you have zero recourse if they turn out to be crap. Knowing all that, it's a gamble. If you win, you score big, if you loose, you are only are out around $5k. You are looking at $450 per lens, which is dirt cheap. pl mounts cost around that much each.

I have bought about 15 lenses from the former USSR. I got burned bad once.

Do you like to play scratch off tickets? If so, go for it. It's a lot of glass for the money.

I think you could generally say about these lenses, mostly good optics, and mostly mediocre mechanics. The High speed versions are much better. ( I used to have the standard and now have the high speeds in PL )

Not really any other options for PL primes in the Sub $15,000 range.

yes, that's a good price, but I (personnaly) think you better not buy them.

To my mind, the only lenses worth buying are the 100mm 150mm 200mm 300mm. Even they are not the latest built. These one are pretty hard to find.

The others are easily and regulary findable separatly for 250$ 300$ on ebay.

I've owned a same set like this one (lenses made between 1979 and 1984) in standard speed, and when I first saw the built of the newer high speed one (from 1984 to 1989, 18 22 28 35 50 75 100 200).. i sold my set to get them. I started one year ago, and still some lenses are missing but the images are damn cool)

I always wonder why they comes in package before buying... so ask the seller if he would consider sell half the set, if not there is a trick.

...And the front caps are included and pictured, but the rear caps are not mentionned nor pictured ... as they were rather fragile, I'm not sure they're included. I bought a 22mm f2.0 from 1982 without rear cap. It was a pain in the... to find one.

Not in PL mount, and not serviced. If you bought all theses lenses separately, and tried to put PL mounts on them in the states, it would cost more than the price of these lenses just for the PL mounts.

Pro's
If the glass is free of fungus (as the seller describes) and there is no mechanical damage, LOMO's are the most affordable professional cine lenses you can get, the best overall value (though these are older lenses). Russian glass has a pretty good reputation. The Russian lenses we have are quite sharp and have projected well in comparison to other professional cine lenses.

These already have PL mounts on them, a big saving.

This is a lot of lenses for the money.

The Soviet motion picture, propaganda and newsreel business used lenses like these for decades in demanding professional service and they served well. Soviet optical science was fairly advanced in terms of design and coating.

Con's
The housings on Soviet lenses are made of softer aluminum, making them a little more fragile if dropped and a little more expensive to service.

The mechanics (machining) of Soviet lens housings is pretty good, but not as precise as the build quality of Zeiss or Cooke lenses of the same era (but compare the cost).

You're dealing with a Ukrainian used camera dealer and if you are unhappy with the lenses, you are probably not going to see your money back (though he has 100% positive feedback).

Lenses like these have often had a rough and difficult life, unlike older German or British lenses which are generally better cared for.

It is possible (if not likely) that you will need to have these lenses cleaned, re-lubed and adjusted by somebody like Duclos before they are ready for prime time. This is a service, however, which will render the lenses close to new in condition, since it will entail cleaning all the old Soviet grease out of them, removing any oil that might contaminate the iris (including disassembling and cleaning the iris blades individually) cleaning the lens elements and adjusting for mechanical issues due to original build problems or subsequent damage in handling. They will also re-paint the engraved numbers if you want.

You will probably have to have the lenses collimated and the PL mounts tweaked, even though the seller indicates that this has been taken care of. Our experience with Russian (or Ukrainian) PL mounts is that they are serviceable, but a little rough around the edges. On the other hand, it is also possible that the guy is on the level and the lenses have already been serviced and collimated. It's a roll of the dice.

I have a full set of similar LOMO's here in the states, they are still mounted OCT-19. BUT I had Doug at LongVally build me an awesome OCT-19 mount for my RED.

I'm probably going to sell them in the next month or so, I just have to many lens mounts and need to consolidate. They are fun lenses, but everything everyone here has said about them mechanically is true.

I know who bought from there, same seller. Not well packaged for. Damages on shipping. He did not replaced and he could do it with a new replacement unit. This buyer didn't want to add a negative feedback though. Or this seller would not have a 100% positive feedback these days.
