This is a nice set of lenses, particularly the high-speed ones. They look like they are from a Kinor set rather than a Konvas set so they have nicer housings. The only thought I have on these is that Russian lenses often need to be cleaned and re-lubed because of their age. Duclos does this. The mount issue can be addressed several different ways. We put PL mounts on all of ours.

But I think Lomos are a great option for a true cine lens, if the glass is good and if they are in good shape mechanically and these look good, as much as can be told by the photos. We have two Cooke zooms, a set of Lomo primes and a set of high-speed Ekrans, for our Red-to-come, all with late dates of manufacture. They are quite sharp.

Hi GFIRob,

I've been out of the loop for awhile and am not fimiliar with the Ekrans line of optics. Sounds like a Kodak product. You know how much they like to use the letter K in their products. lol Anyhow I'm wondering what they are.

cheers,

The Russian lens manufacturers are confusing, because they sort of melded together at the end of the Soviet era (or so I am told). Most of the lenses (standard speed) are LOMOs, which was a huge company during Soviet times and still is in business making microscopes, night vision devices and so on. Ekran was a sort of research and development group and they made high-speed lenses, some lightweight zooms (like the excellent 25-80) and other lenses made in smaller batches. I think they were in St. Petersburg as LOMO is still. The high-speed lenses they made were made in small numbers and are very good, both in sharpness and in contrast. CKBK was also an R&D company that built lenses but I think in the end Ekran and CKBK were the same. Its quite confusing. But Ekran lenses are quite good and that is what the high-speed lenses usually are. Almost all of these lenses are found in Oct 19 mount and need to be converted. The Lomo's are not hard to convert, but the Ekrans are more complex, but can be done. Its just more expensive. We have a full set of LOMO's, a smaller set of Ekran speeds, an Ekran 25-80, and two Cooke zooms as well.

Just to put in my two cents, one of the biggest problems with LOMO lenses is dealing with (and paying) Russian or Ukrainian sellers and shipment to the States. Lenses that are already in the States being sold by someone who can give some assurance of approval of the lenses and return of the money if the buyer is not satisfied is a very big plus (I assume this seller would do that). Once you take dealing with Russians out of the equation, the lenses are much more attractive, I think. Of course if he won't give you approval and an assurance of refund, then I guess its the same...

True, the payment and wait times are an issue with russian sellers. I recently got 2 LOMO lenses pl mounted at spbsale.com, though, and all went well.
It takes about a month for the lenses to get there and back , most of this time is due to the russian postal service. The actual pl mounts took about 5 days.

Hi Abdul Jamal,

I just PM-ed you about these lenses. Do you know if the 22mm fully covers super-35? I've been told that the older 18mm and 22mm Lomos (i.e. from the early eighties) do not.

Thanks,

sirkian

I also have a set and a half of LOMOs. Recently took one to get cleaned at a camera shop. Cleaner said it was one of the best pieces of glass he'd ever seen. Instead of having all of mine converted from OCT-19 mounts to PL mounts, I just had an OCT-19 mount made for the Red. It was made by Doug Underdahl, who can be found on these boards.
