  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lomo Anamorphics Pics

Beautiful stuff, Mike. Thanks for posting the images. BTW: What was your monitoring strategy while shooting? I'm curious as to whether you used an onboard monitor with a de-squeeze capability (such as the Carrion or the Nebtek NEB70HDS monitor). P.S. Please check your PM. Thanks.

Unfortunatly, I was looking at a squeezed image through the LCD the whole time. It's not impossible to shoot squeezed and get your framing right, just a real annoyance! Desqueezing your images in REDCINE is almost like seeing them for the first time but I've learned to imagine the desqueezed image now through the 4:3 ana mode frame. When these lenses go on their first job I'll be sure to rent a Monitor with Anamorphic desqueeze option. I want to buy the Carrion but in these economic times $2,000.00 is best held onto for the time being.

Shawn - I'm on set and away from my house for a few days but when I get back I'll try to post some video.
Glad to see there are some other anamorphic lovers here!

It's about 3:1 or so. I love the uberscope too but for most this is way too wide and can be distracting unless used sparringly and stylistically for that very purpose.

I will get in touch next time I come to Tahoe. Feel free to contact me next time your in Sac.

The images below are the full scope of anamorphic on RED which is unusable before being cropped in to 2.35:1 in its Uber-Scope as Brook likes to call it. I personally think its awesome and will find a way to use this aspect ratio sometime, somewhere, somehow. More to come soon.

Interesting to see work with anamorphic lenses on Red... However, you must mean 2.39:1?

Actually, the full scope of the anamorphic recording on the RED when desqueezed is closer to 3:1. Look at those images I posted again a little closer. Since RED records the full scensor in 4k ana mode and because that scensor is 16:9 and not full frame 4:3 you get an uber-scope of about 3:1 when desqueezed in a 4k frame. In a 2k frame when you scale your image to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio you actually cut off about 25% of your image total on both sides. Of course you have a 4:3 frame guide that translates to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio when desqueezed when recording in 4k ana mode but the scensor still records everything outside of those guides as well.

Er... yes, I am aware of the Red window size. I was referring to the fact that 2.35:1 is a misnomer as, since 1971, the standard (SMPTE) was changed to 2.39:1. Even though many people (and DVDs, websites, etc.) still say "2.35:1", it is technically incorrect.

Total. Looked for them early and found great deals. Not sure those prices apply now (I assume they don't) but I think this is fair price for these lenses. Got them all from private individuals.

Hi Mike,

Wow! Great deal! that seems cheap considering over the past 6 months or so it looks like the going price for these lenses (at least as far as I've seen) are floating around the 3-5k per lens range...perhaps I haven't looked in the right places. Where did you find the sellers, ebay, classifieds, etc?

Like I said, I doubt those prices still apply in this inflated lens market. The last guy I bought from had a few other Lomos that I already had. He was asking $4,000.00 for them and they were in pristine condition qualified at Schneider optics. Three days later I saw those lenses on eBay for $11,000.00.

Mike - beautiful stuff.

Are you using Build 18 with the 4k ana setting? Do you or does anyone know what the sensor area used is, and if there is a desqueeze in this build on the monitor?
