  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

[FS: OPTICS] Lomo Anamorphic Round Front Front 50mm T2.5 - PL Mount

Good question about the stop!
Those lenses wont go any sharper than this anyways ....this is part of their look.
If you have misaligned anamorphic elements you wont have defocus , but really bad fuzz that cannot be misstaken.

You can easily re-align the elements to straighten the skew but I found that it was something that often drifted out of place (after repair) almost daily as the torque from removing the lens or mounting a lens each day was enough to torque the housing with weak screws that tries to prevent the skewing from misaligned elements. My lens tech created a low-profile black Delron ring to lock the housing in place so that it didn't do the skew anymore. It's been great ever since, as it was very annoying having to pay to get them serviced and aligned all the time. The housing is weak but the glass is amazing.

Hey Daniel,
The t-stop we shot this in was probably around 2.8- to 3.5.
I think the sweet spot is around 3.5 - 4
But I can ask the cinematographer how he shot it. I can't remember the exact details.

By the way here is another video shot with that lens ( and other focal lengths ).

I wasn't part of that production so I can't talk much about the specifics.

Remember pulling focus on anamorphic is no joke. Much shallower depth of field then spherical.

Best,
Eric

Sweet spot on the 50mm Ana Lomo round is t4-5,6.
I think a I have the charts on all round front lomo somewhere. I did them myself two years ago.

Anything below t4 will be soft. Manageable at 2.8 with post sharpening though.

BUT the 50mm round front is still the sharpest, then the 75, 100, 35.

Yeah, anamorphics are thirsty for light. The curved focus field is exaggerated in these lenses which means that to have coverage of it you need a wider Depth of Field. As you stop open the aperture the DoF naturally becomes shallower and may begin to clip the edges or center of the focus curve. It can be done with clever framing.

In fact, a lot of the shots in Ex-Machina reveal the lusty anamorphic look... I remember a lot of outdoor shots where the foliage in the edges was particularly soft.

I remember that too! Do you know what lenses ex-machine was filmed on. It looks great!

Ex Machina was on Cooke Xtal Anamorphics and Kowas.

Yeah the 50mm anamorphic lomo that I sell here is not half as bad as that ones.
Although the interior stuff looked great.

The Cooke Xtal and Kowa anamorphics have far better characteristics than lomos but that's a discussion for a different thread...

yeah its all about taste.

I know this is a 'for sale' thread, but given the above discussion...Does anyone know of a document that tells you how to adjust skew on the Square Fronts? I've got a bit of skew on my 80mm SF. And can a misaligned PL mount contribute to skew? My PL mount comes loose once in a while.

Still available and open to take offers.

Still available. Still taking offers.
By the way the whole discussion about having to have a big fix (opening up the lens etc.) to remove the skew was just nonsense.

Somebody send me this video here as you can see, the lens doesn't not have to be taken apart, it only needs some mount adjustment. Just as I got told by technicians and I repeated multiple times.
