Hi,
I have a feature destined for video release (blu-ray & dvd). It's going to have dramatic color grading; it will be completely unlike the "as shot" profile of REDColor/REDGamma. There's no chance it will ever be printed to film.

The most mathematically pure way of coloring RAW is to start with CameraRGB in Linear space. The only reason to use REDLog or REDGamma etc is if you're going to film or not concerned about "most mathematically pure"
My encoder support both 16-bit TIFFs and 10-bit DPX. For Linear workflows, TIFF is preferable, right??

Let me know if I got this all wrong!

Yes, for linear output you'll want 16bit tiffs, set ISO to 320 too. There's a black offset in the data to preserve the full noise floor, which will be at code value 800 in the 16bit tiff.

If you use cameraRGB then you are in charge of the colorimetry! Enjoy,

Graeme

Graeme,
Actually, a few more questions!
What's the neutral setting for Saturation with the new color science? It's defaulting to 1.2. My pre-MX footage metadata has saturation of 1.0.

Where should white balance be applied? with the metadata handles in the SDK, or independently in the host?

My other question has probably been asked, but I've searched high and low and can't find an answer, so...

I know and recognize that the new color science is superior. But I need to change a few frames in a feature that was graded in After Effects CS4 with Color Finesse using old color science.
When I use After Effects CS5, interpret the old Pre-MX R3Ds "as shot", and apply my old color finesse settings, the result is way off.

What are the current settings in CS5 that match the RED CS4 Importer v1.7.0 defaults?

I'm not sure if I'm phrasing my question properly, so let me know if you need clarification!

Thanks again

It should default to 1.0 - if it's not, can you tell me what version of the software so that we can check that out?

I'm not sure on what adobe is doing. I do the math behind the scenes, so I don't always know exactly what the software that's using the sdk is doing. My guess though is that what you're seeing is a white balance difference, so if you were to re-white-balance the shots they'd probably work out ok.
