  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So my editor wants to use the log and transfer in FCP to ingest the r3d files we will have after our shoot. He has the files for Fcp downloaded from the red site. I will be doing the color work in Apple Color and would like to access the actuall R3D files when doing the corrections and grade. My questions are;

1. If he ingests the medium proxy's for the all the footage so he can edit on a macbook pro, will this create some form of proRes file ( which ever he chooses) that will block the link to to the R3D's when i say send to color?

2. If so will I have to use clipfinder to reconform all clips?

3. We will be mastering at 1080p, which means we plan on doing some frame re-adjusting to get new shots when possible and some 2k slow mo stuff. Is it better to do the corrections in FCP while still editing or when in color? Im not sure exactly if a zoom in FCP will send through to color which would adjust the 4k accordingly.

4. How do we do a proper 1080p master? Do i set comp size somewhere in color to the 1080 or do i do all my adjustments in color then send back to a blank fcp timeline which i set to be 1080?

I understand some of these questions probably sound stupid but I dont have any .r3d's to play around with to work this stuff out.

Any help would be great. Thanks

read the FCP white paper that comes with the RED software downloads which clearly explains the log/transfer workflow. there is no use of proxies (that is a different workflow that does include the use of clipfinder).
color does read any zoom (resizing) done in FCP and you can adjust further if need in geometry tab.
color reads the full size r3d (4k 0r 2k) and renders out files the size that you set in color preference tab.
i suggest reading the color manual carefully about this workflow as well as you need to fully understand the relation between FCP / r3d / color / back to FCP...

1. Don't use proxies or get Clipfinder – there is a bug with spanned clips.
2. Careful with 4.5K, it's complicated.

So ive read a lot about fcp only being able to only handle 2k but i just sent a 4k clip from color to fcp which showed the sequence settings as being 4k and i was able to export a 4k quicktime file. Am i missing something here?

FCP can handle (For certain values of "Handle") 4k. What it can't do is handle 4k *REDCODE*. Don't ask me why. So if you L&T a 4K clip into FCP, you'll get 2K. Send it to Color, shift it up to 4K, render and send it back, and you'll have a 4K clip/sequence. Go figure.
