So Sony's "4k" cams and monitor are about to hit the streets. From the f55 you can live monitor 4k using 4 3G hdsdi cables to feed this new monitor. This got me thinking, there's no way to do this with epic as of now right? Do you think there is an additional module in the works? Another interesting thing is the 7" 1920x1080 on-camera monitor Sony is releasing with the f55. Does this mean we will soon see small 1920x1080 monitors from everyone? Discuss! : )

If Red arnt going to do this then who is going to do it. Seems a completely logical step to me. More to the point what are you going to monitor the 4K on ?

Interesting.

Is the display big enough to resolve 4k to the eye. I don't recall the screen size to viewing distance calculations but 30 inch seems very small for a 4k display.

Also with a bunch of coax cables needed out of the camera Im wondering if theres not some new format may be Fibre based to pipe this stuff around.

Looks like they would use 1 HDMI for the 4k output.

surprised more people aren't commenting on this...

I should mention that I am very interested in having a live 4K (4.096 by 2,160 or 3,840 by 2,160) output from the Epic. If I could buy a $2,500 module that offered 4K taps that would ROCK!

I can imagine some very interesting live applications for concerts/multi-media/even i-mag. I also like the idea of pulling focus off a 4K monitor as well as immediate QC.

This is kinda a paradox to me.

I do not need 16 bit monitoring, because I do not really want 16 stops of light thrown at me in a viewfinder.
On a silver screen with the compression of distance... That is another subject.

And for grading, I'll take as many bits as I can get!

Same goes with rez...
i think a 1080/2k monitor option would be useable more than useable, given that the screens are good.
But to enjoy 4k, my guess is that Iwould need an image which is too big to really be able to do a good framing.

I know my friend Detlev disagrees withthat assumption... And I am readyto be convinved otherwise. i do agree that the current lcd (which is less than 720) is of too low resolution for a lot of critical judgements.

But I do not see the need for 4k monitoring on set. I like the hype, though

Good for focus check certainly. Will red come out with a small 1080 monitor? Sonys is about $5k I think...

1080/2k would cover a need for sure. Even at 8bit 4:2:0

It is a paradox that the main advocate of 4k+, does not even offer a 720p monitoring option when shooting. If not connected with a 3rd party option...

Id certainly want the monitor not to have any 4.2.2 color issues or color space issues due to the interface irespective of resolution and bit depth.

Well to clarify, I certainly want resolution and also bit depth. What I dont want is anything fouling up the image to to some half whitted interface on the camera/monitor is what I was trying to say. I don't think 4 HDSDI feeds from a camera is a great plan or if the interface offers some form of truncating data I really don't want to be seeing any quantising issues.

Well I still see : The PVM-X300 is also equipped with a unique feature of evaluating video signal of 4096x2160/60p with one single HDMI cable when connected to Sony’s new PMW-F55 4K camera system.

Is it one or 4?

Pat

Yes you are right it say's 1. But It also says 4. Im confused, perhaps its just me......

Yeah I think it can do either 4 hdmi, or 1 hdmi, or 4 sdi

HDMI 1.4 support 4k over a single cable at 10 bit per channel at 24P. At lower resolutions it supports up to 16 bit of color par channel or up to 120P. 4K over SDI can only be done with 4 cables. The main difference, SDI can be run over very long distances, while HDMI would need a extender over fiber or something else, obviously, very expensive.
Anyway, see for yourself
