If I'm just going from a Sound Devices 302 into the Red camera, does it matter if I use any old xlr-mini cable versus the special RED xlr-mini cables? what about adapters, same deal there? are the special red cables only needed when using phantom power from the red camera?

I ask this because I only have special RED cables that are really short, I need longer cables to go from the mixer to the camera, and I'm hoping to use any old XLR cable with an adapter if it works.

You should be using the RED cables if you can or you'll need to adjust your line output level from your mixer device to get appropriate headroom. The RED cables have pads in them. See the notes about audio levels in the Operations Guide Build 16 v3.1.6 or later. Those notes relate to Build 15 or 16.

Yes, should be no problem.

Oh yeah. I totally forgot about my cables from Coffey Sound. I don't have time to test them since my camera is all packed up and leaving within the hour for the next 2 months....

Anyone have these cables to test on Builds 15 or 16?

Do you for see a time when the L-Pad may migrate into the camera in a future hardware rework? In the meantime, I'll continue making cables with the pads.


Clearlighter,
The Coffey Cables will work, depends whether they have the pads installed or not, but, you may possibly have less than desirable results with out the pad. you will have to be careful with the hotter input. It is recommended to use the new Design cables.
