I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere. I was curious if Red announced that you only had the opportunity to trade in your Scarlet for a limited time?

I don't think they mentioned a time limit but did say it would go on for a while. Like many others, we chose to get out of line for a while since we weren't ready yet to upgrade our Scarlet.

As in the past, RED will give you a decently fair warning if they're shutting doors. At least a month notice... probably half a year (e.g. Trade-In only active until end of 2013 or something.) I don't think they've ever been like, "oh and we're stopping trade-ins at the end of the day, so you have 5hours to take advantage."

Mike P, not to contradict, but with the eligibility for certain stage paths as part of the RED ONE-to-EPIC (Stages 2 and 3), a line was drawn in the sand at time of post. A ton of factors go into the timing and logistics for every "special" program we do like these, rest assured.

As Jarred said, "all good things come to an end" so these will not be completely open ended. As soon as we have an update, you will find it here on REDUSER.

Hey Brent,

Thanks a lot. Is there any recommendation about "when to order", and how long the current waiting time is? (Sacrlet to Epic). To get budget and availability in sync.

Or if a delivery date is targeted around end of June, what is the best time to place the order?

Thanks for any hints :o)

All the best

Sassi

Whoa, whoa, Brent, does that mean you guys are thinking of closing the Scarlet trade-in program BEFORE Dragon actually starts shipping?

Sassi, to which Epic - M-X or Dragon?

Mike, I did not say that, no. My post merely was correcting a general statement on advanced notice. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hey Brent,

Epic M-X for now (Dragon has to be a little bit patient...)
My target in end of June (+/-).

Hey Brent,

Epic M-X for now (Dragon has to be a little bit patient...)

We are making pretty good headway with SCARLET for EPIC M-X orders so orders placed today would probably have a week or so before you got the "send in your SCARLET" email.

So, anyone going now for a Scarlet-X to EPIC-X upgrade could get caught in a time/money pressure to upgrade to EPIC Dragon. Good to keep that in mind.
Also it seems that a day might come when it is announced without prior notice - from today all upgrade programs are terminated. That could happen (wild guess) anywhere from end of 2013 until end of 2014.
Why RED cannot confirm that it will give prior notice of at least 3 months prior to termination of upgrade programs I don't understand. Exactly due to the lack of such communication I have a bad feeling it will happen without prior notice.
I'm considering Scarlet-X -> EPIC-X -> EPIC Dragon but am afraid I will not have the money in time for the second step. Therefore I'm contemplating Scarlet Dragon path.
I just hope I will make the first (and maybe only) step in time, before sudden upgrade program termination.

Thanks a lot Brent,

Sounds good. I hope to send in my order in a month, and the camera will be in Hollywood or OC the day I get the e-mail :o) (I love that it is that close!)

I'm pretty excited about that offer and grateful. As I use this camera mostly to get production based training, budget dominates the timing here.

Have a great day!

Marko, my original post in this thread was in the effort to eliminate assumptions being misconstrued as facts. No one should read into my posts more than that.

Brent, Your post didn't actually motivate me to make assumptions - it just motivated me to voice my doubts I had from the initial announcement.
Let's make this other way around. What would help me in making my decision about the upgrade path would be something like this:

1. Scarlet-X -> EPIC-X and Scarlet-X -> Scarlet Dragon path will be open until end of 2013 (might be prolonged, but consider it fixed)
2. EPIC-X -> EPIC Dragon path will be open until 6/30/2014 (might be prolonged, but consider it fixed)
You should place your reservations/pre-orders before these dates to be eligible for the upgrade program.
Actual upgrade date for your camera will depend on the total quantities of applicants for the upgrade program and in no way relates to the end dates for the eligibility.
You MUST have your money ready from the moment of placing the pre-order, but there is no guarantee about the actual upgrade date.

Clean, upfront - makes planning possible and removes uncertainties about future events.

I assume there are business planning obstacles from RED side of the curtain that prevent you from stating something like this.
The main problem I have in reaching a decision is the cutoff date for EPIC-X -> EPIC Dragon upgrade path.

But that is my problem. RED has offered more then generous options for us to bang our heads on :-)

Hi Brent,
Thanks a lot for your responses. I am basically in the same situation as Marko. Still undecided whether to go Scarlet Dragon or Epic X (later on, Epic Dragon). The only reason I have not pulled the trigger these past weeks is because I am waiting to have certain information. So I guess my question is if in the near future RED is going to provide a clear timetable regarding the upgrade program. My guess is that many of us would only take the Epic X route if we are then given a 1-2 year margin to upgrade our Epic X to Epic Dragon. If that were not the case, I would clearly take Scarlet Dragon right now.

Many thanks!!

Cheers.

Until RED officially releases Dragon, I doubt they can realistically predict the window they need for the trade ins. There are so many factors they must consider but the first obstacle is to actually finish Dragon. My personal guess is that the window for the upgrades will not be as long as they have been in the past.

Marko and TD, see Jarred's post here. He said it would be "likely" that you would be able to upgrade from EPIC M-X to EPIC DRAGON in 2014. Not guaranteed, but likely.

So, even given that, I know SCARLET folks are wrestling with what path to choose. And we have a ton of SCARLET owners opting for each path (upgrade to SCARLET DRAGON or trade-in for EPIC). So it is a matter of what tool fits your needs. If the specs of SCARLET DRAGON meet your needs, lock in a pre-order now. If you want the horsepower of EPIC M-X and option to go to EPIC DRAGON after, lock it in.

But back to Jarred's post, I would expect the option to go from EPIC M-X to EPIC DRAGON will be a good-sized window. So I think if you go EPIC M-X sooner than later, you can have the flexibility to move to EPIC DRAGON later on.

I don't know if that helps you guys at all, but that is where we are at right now.

Thanks Brent. I think that clears things up for me. This was the reason I went with Epic upgrade for now.

Many thanks, Brent. It certainly helps. "Not guaranteed, but likely" is a bit scary (in case I finally choose the Epic path), but I totally understand that at this stage this is all you can confirm.
cheers
