  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lightweight S35 PL zooms for epic

check out the new Carl Zeiss Compact Zoom 70-200 and Compact Zoom 28-80! 70-200 shipping this year, 28-80 early next year! Great lenses, very lightweight...

Based on the OP's budget, I would recommend the RED 17-50 and the RED 50-150. If he needs a tighter AOV at times, then pick up a 2X PL extender. You lose half a stop, but having enough light is almost never a concern shooting snowsports. At least that's been my experience. Getting those two lenses for around $10K is probably do-able, but might take a while to find the right deals.

The old RED 18-50 zoom is really good optically, other than the heavy breathing if that bothers you. Mechanically it was seriously lacking and reliability was always questionable. It also varied from one lens to another. I had one for a time that was excellent. I've used some others that were anything but. So you can pick them up cheap, but it's a real gamble as to their mechanical quality. The 17-50 RPZ is a whole different animal with much improved build quality. It's an excellent little lens.

If budget were no object, I would pick up the Angenieux Optimo DP set - 16-46 and 30-80's as well as the new 45-120 Angenieux zoom. All fit the bill perfectly. But that's $100K in glass.... :(

Agree!

A 2x extender is not a half stop, it's two stops FYI.

Hehe... ooops. I guess I was just typing away... And yes, some of them even a bit more than 2 stops, depending on the optical quality of their magnifier.
