  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LightRoom 6 - does it work with R3D's ???

Just tried importing an R3D in LR6. No native support :(

You gotta be fuckin kidding?!?

RED & Adobe . . . what's up?? You guys can't get a couple engineers to communicate with each other?

Not tested any R3D files with LR6, would that work with the Photoshop plug in from RED?

BTW, I had the hardest time finding the update from "perpetual" LR5 to LR6, it is available: Place the full version on your card and edit the card accordingly.

I would guess this is tied in to the release that will be happening in a couple of months which has some big updates for REd while working in Premiere.

Let's hope so, I'd love to have a sync folder where I can throw my R3D snapshots to manage and Develop inside Lightroom. Unfortunately it still treats R3D snapshots as unreadable video clips. The performance of Lightroom 6 is a welcome addition, but it feels like they aren't putting too much effort in each LR update anymore since they don't have any true competition out there. The fact that their architecture is still based on SQLite is ridiculous.

Unacceptable that DMSC RED products are not supported but my mom's Canon PowerShot XYZ is.

RED = SINO . . . Stills In Name Only

Just export to TIFF? Lightroom is primirily a photo editting program, not a video tool.

Adobe plugin allows you to open r3d into photoshop and save out a file type. Just like if you open Nikon or canon Raw.

The idea of LR is to work with Raw files and leave raw with a list of adjustments, no conversations.

To go with anything else there would not allow to use the full potential.

As we all know, the development of RED color/gamma etc improves over time even older shots.

Anything else would turn LR in an image management tool only.

To go the Photoshop route seems counterproductive, and misses the point of LR.

We are trying to develop single R3D stills - not the video file.

It's only 8-bit and doesn't make sense when you can export a 16 bit tiff from REDCINE directly. It's an extra step.

The render out a tiff option isn't an answer - it's a stop gap. It would be like having to render out every single shot you take from REDCINE to ProRes or DNxHD or DPX just to get it into Premiere or AVID or FCPX if they didn't have raw native support.

OK,

The RED SDK probably does not allow ADOBE enough access to the image file or to process the file in a way that they want to process it.

Also, perhaps it would work only on r3d snapshots or single frames as I am not sure lightroom can handle video streams. Of course they should also open up ARRIRaw support as well so that folks could pick out streams from that RAW stream.

My point is that there would have to be a mechanism in place and a solid user base using these functions for adobe, DXO, Apple Photo or other apps that read RAW to have their own decoding, etc.

Who writes and implements that code for each software is another matter.

personally, I'd be more keen on seeing a simple iPad app that lets me see an r3d snapshot and export a still, but that is just me.

I had only stills in mind.

Apple's Photo is certainly not even close for me to be considered even to try with R3Ds. (It is not even close a replacement for Aperture, it is nothing but a big disappointment)

Yes, DXO is a good idea, and perhaps their engineers are more open than Adobe's to get something like this done.

I always have hope that one day someone really shows up with a full 32bit/float app. Fingers crossed. (LR6's HDR idea is only half float DNG, so no OpenEXR full)

BTW the plug in is not 8bit/channel, that was discussed a year+ ago already here on RU.

Eric Chan (my bud) and Thomas Knoll are the brains behind Adobe Camera RAW which is, bar none, the best RAW converter for still images. The code for ACR is the same in PS as it is in LR. Someone just needs prioritize this project and flip the switch.

No big trade secrets need to be exchanged here. Somehow Apple has figured out how to get their ProRes into the public domain without issue. We need for R3D's to do the same.

I have no doubt, never had, that anything that carries the name Knoll (true for both of the brothers) in it inside of Adobe has quality and a touch+ of genius in it.)

Just finished fixing up my "latest" pc debacle over CS6 Pr with Adobe but they do have some great tools...

I am rather hoping that these guys over at Resolve are paying close attention for their forth-coming version 12!

It would seem a lot of fish are going to be in the market for a better RAW editor-color corrector without having to jump ship on applications!

I've graded a good number of snapshots from my trip to Iceland in Lr 5 and Lr 6. Instead of saving the snap shot as an R3D, I save it as a TIFF and then import it in. Basically like working with the real R3D and the colors and dynamic range I get are fabulous. Definitely as good as the PhaseOne or Pentax images I've graded.

VSCO pack 05 and 04 work wonders on the image and don't crush the shadows or blow highlights due to the massive range the image has. I shot all my "photos" in 6K 2:1 with a 5:1 compression ratio.

Any word on when release of CC 2015 will take place?
