I am shooting some actors doing a direct address for a promotional and I want my lighting to look like this. http://www.vimeo.com/6834995 I have two 1.2 HMis a Kino four bank and two cool lights. Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

Unless I'm missing something, it looks like two lights; both "3/4 back." The key stronger and more to the side, the kick in the usual position and scrimmed down. Your HMIs should do the job nicely.

There could be a little front fill, very, very little; probably depends on the dynamic range of your camera.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Thanks guys - makes sense. What does 3/4 back mean? Using the RED with standard sensor.

the lights are positioned on both sides and off to his back.. the camera left light is closer in and harder, while the right side is diffused and less intense.

then throw a white board next to the camera to fill in the front

(or use a kino and just dial it down to 1 or 2 bulbs

Also, I would guess that by the softness of the way the light wraps around his body that the light is coming through silks. This is apparent in the soft fill across the grass from those two lights... notice there are no hard shadows of him on the ground. Using really dramatic angles on soft lighting is one of my favorite esthetics.
