  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lightcraft Workshop Fader ND

I have one. Brilliant for quick changes with minimal color shift, but it softens the hell out of the image.

Which made for great aesthetic effect on this joke of a music video we did... 300,000 views agree. If you're shooting women or kids outdoors (this video), perfect; re-creating Normandy, perhaps not.

I got the Heliopan fader ND for around $400 and use it regularly on my RED 18-50 zoom for times when a matte box would be a hinderance.

While there is some slight softening and color shift, physics and all, I can recommend the Heliopan as a pretty clean option. Would be curious to see a proper test of the various fader NDs on the market...

Not sure, but I don't think these have any IR protection, just straight ND.

Thanks for that link, I hadn't seen that before. Wow the Schneiders really outperformed the Formatts.

I actually haven't done any specific testing on the softening effect--but it's enough that I can see it with the naked eye. That video was shot on a Canon so it was <1080 soft to begin with...

A variable ND is two polarizers up against each other, so even the best is going to soften the image excessively once you go hot n' heavy (.9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8...)
