Hello,

I am on the hunt for some light wight parfocal zooms. I really want something that has nice smooth zoom and a good range that is parfocal. I have been looking around and most seem to pretty heavy and very expensive. Do you guys know any good light weight inexpensive zooms? I have been locking at the old red zooms 18-50 and 50-150. They seem great. Any one have hand on experience with these lenses? Or know the price of them used?

Thanks,

Jacob

i think i researched this to death, are you looking for PL or EF mount? and what price range?
my favorite but most expensive are the angeniuex optimos, obviously, they are the work horse of the industry.
but a very good option for low cost is a rehoused sigma 18-35mm
then in the medium price range, if you can find a zeiss LWZ2…or an older optimo DP lens.

Jacob,

Give me a cal at maxx digital and i am happy to help you find the lenses you need and at a good price

The Ekran 25-80mm T3.5 is a great light weight zoom. Covers Dragon 5K.

Is the Ekran parfocal? Also, are they all f2.8/t3.5?

EDIT: Thanks Nick (below).

To the above question, yes it is parfocal, it's a proper cine lens, and the second part, depends, but more or less.

Not all of the 18-35s were par focal when I bought mine. I went through several to find one that was solid.

All the GL Optics ones are, its guaranteed.
There is a pretty nice one on ebay right now made by VER? looks like a tank.
i would go that route if i wasnt getting a raven, now id rather keep the electronic mount.

I've shot a lot with - and own - both the red zooms. They are nice for the money, pretty sharp, and good range. They cover 5k HD. You could probably get both lenses for under 10000 but get the 2nd gen of the 18-50. They are good for run and gun situations and if you are running a b-cam it's useful to have two lenses. I shot this piece with them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioQYap0OB7s

There's a lot of stuff happening with electronic lenses right now and it might be a good idea to take a look at that before jumping into these older zooms but if you do decide to buy them I think you'd be happy. I shot bicamera on this low budget film and we cut them together with the fuginon 19-90 (not ideal!) and I think for the most part it was hard to tell the difference. The fuginon was definitely sharper sometimes but.... you try and tell the difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVqN6PG2BN8

I know its a bit of an old post but my 25-80 Lomo zoom has just come up for sale!

Thanks

The new Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 is parfocal... You cant get it till late April. But it is none the less.

Cheers

You can now pickup the previous generation Angenieux DP zooms 16-42mm and 30-80mm for crazy good prices (mainly because the new ones don't have the super-deep lens throat of the DPs, which made them incompatible with certain cameras that have filters behind the lens mount).

I've seen them go for $11,000-13,000k a piece recently - which is a BARGAIN.

So I'd suggest keeping an eye out for those.
