I have a light and stripped-down rig – I am wondering if it is better in general to make the rig heavier? Whenever I see RED cameras used on large films usually everything is mounted on the camera. Does a heavier rig provide more stability, or is this tactic used so it can be used with high-end tripods that have bigger payloads? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Heavier rigs potentially can be more stable and show less impact on the image when interfacing with the camera, lens, or accessories. You want a little heft even on small setups honestly.

Too lightweight and you'll find all sorts of things begin to influence the image. Even a slight breeze in some cases.
