Most NLEs are what I describe as "prominant timelines with background databases."
What FCP-X brings to the market is a prominant database and asset manager that happens to display assets in a timeline. Whether or not you feel FCP-X is the best tool for the job of editorial, I can say with certainty that the unique relationship of "a prominant database over a timeline" is the core architecture *ALL* NLEs will adopt in the coming years. It's because of this "power under the hood" development strategy Apple has deployed on FCP-X that we can innovate in ways we were previously unable to for NLEs. Companies like MotionVFX (www.motionvfx.com) are just one of the brilliant groups leveraging the API available in FCP-X just like the thousands of developers for the iTunes App Store.

Here is a link to a video of some pretty cool developments with Apple and iPads we've been working on with some talented filmmakers who are helping take FCP-X to a whole new level.

Hi Michael,

that is pretty amazing.

I would love to see that exact video with an R3D workflow. Where I could use the lightiron QT's to link back to the r3d's

i think I will test tha out in the coming days actually.

Thanks for creating these tools, light iron products are top notch and dead smart and reliable. Every client is pretty blown away. To share a brief story, one of my recent clients was blown away that we we watching morning material over lunchtime on his ipad. He turns to me and says, "can't even really call the dailies anymore, it's more like hourly!"

Of course on commercial sets its actually after every take!

Cheers,
david

In theory, it should be pretty much the same, no? For the Alexa workflow that we're watching, the metadata is being tagged to proxies being recorded off a live tap from the Alexa. Then you're selecting the clips in FCPX and saying "HEY! There's metadata over there! Lookit it!" and then it takes all your tags from the proxies and assigns them to the original negatives of the same filename. Would work as long as you have a recording system out that is using the same clipnames as the camera, taking such from the SDI. Like the Pix 240. Or the Red Proxy recording solution would work, too. Probably a bit harder on, say, the HyperDeck Shuttle, which doesn't take the clip names from the SDI. Unless you manually rename all the clips there.

It actually took me a minute to even catch that this was happening. My first thought was "Why does he have to import the clips and then select the clips and then import the XML . . . " and then I realized the mismatch in proxies versus raws.

Yet another motivation for me to pick up FCPX again. Getting more curious what "big changes" are coming in a few months that they teased when they previewed the new Mac Pro.

Thanks Michael.

I already posted a thread about the Light Iron applications... but I would like ask would it be possible to implement using ProRes LT and or ProRes Proxy to stream the clips to the iPad Apps? I would find this flexible since you can use the same formats for mobile editing.

Thanks

So we where going to try out this workflow from Light Iron but maybe someone can help out how to use Live Play?
Cause when the App is started I only get this after the login:

To expand on what Terry said, Light Iron Server is a free app that you need to install on a computer on the same network that the iPad is wirelessly connected to.

You also need to feed Light Iron Server a filetype that is compatible with LivePlay; it doesn't take ProRes and convert as needed.

I got all that. It seems the App does not play well with iOS 7. I works on one of our iPad (2) with iOS6.

Hoping for a update soon. We will have to pass on it for this upcoming project.

Looks like you have everything running well. And a new version for latest iOS is on the iTunes App Store.
Your screen grab looks correct, you just need to push the "Assets" button in upper right and select any H264 in Li Server and it will play.
"Select and Asset" screen is just that: Live Play is waiting for you to choose a clip to view.

LMK if you are experiencing any issues, but the screen cap you displayed looks correct from here:)

Hi Michael, thank you for the response! Well the problem is there is no Assets button. The screen shot that I uploaded is in the horizontal position (iPad), it looks like the App itself is stuck in the vertical position. The login screen does show correctly.
Yes the rotation lock is off and it is only in Live Play for example ToDailies has no issues displaying correctly.

I 'em only experiencing this issue on iOS7 with Live Play 2.4.9.

Thank you

Ops, sorry also ToDailies is not being displayed correctly on iOS7.
I was working of a iPad that still has iOS6.

Ahhhh. I see.
Let me get an update on the App Store ASAP.
The new build is no longer showing this problem on my end, but it could be a factor with the new iOS that I did see happen once during testing. If you want in the meantime, try "tricking" it by logging in and out and changing the orientation of the iPad in between logins. I believe that's what I did when I saw this issue. Will work on replacing the build immediately. Thanks for the heads up.

Michael,

I just downloaded the updates for the Apps on the iPad and the latest Light Iron Server 2.5 all looks fine. Awesome thanks!
But I do have one more question about exporting Final Cut Pro X. Is there any support in the near future where the Meta Data information is translate into the corresponding fields in Final Cut Pro X? Which reminds me when I watched the More Live Play Metadata for FCPX video Light Iron Server has a darker look and when exporting Final Cut Pro XML the file extension is .fcpxml. Is there a different version or is it something on my side?

Thanks

T.A.-
Lots of good stuff coming and will be updating everyone with things soon. In fact, the current version of Li Server on the Li Website is a "soft release" of some major upgrades, including improved support for iOS7.
Much more to come.

I may be doing something incorrectly, but when I chose export with my media/project selected under the Export tab of Light Iron Server, it generates a .xml file, but then FCPX won't import it (Grayed out) because FCPX wants a .fcpxml file instead.. and if I manually append the LI exported .xml, I receive an error window in FCPX on import.. Thoughts? Running Light Iron Server 2.5.1 and FCPX 10.0.9.

Thanks in Advance!
