  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

light bulb ban

I have kept a couple. There have been replacements in traditional incandescent bulb style made with halogen bulbs inside a larger envelope. The ones I bought at our local supermarket lasted all of about 1/50th of a second and went black. These CFL globes which were supposed to be the duck's guts and last longer to justify the higher retail cost have been a dead loss too. They blow nearly as often as the old incandescents, a nice little profit for somebody in cash-cowing the consumer - again. If they are so inherently reliable due to their materials and construction, one wonders if they do not have a countdown chip inside them, so many permitted lighting cycles and then unresponsive deaddo, or as has become a popular catchword on this forum -- "brick".

I was under the impression this was just about the manufacture of these bulbs in the US. You haven't been able to get a US made incandescent lightbulb for a while. At home depot, there are hundreds of vintage bulb choices made in mexico and china.

Does anyone know where you can still buy 100w soft white light bulbs? Local stores or the web.

You're lucky then. Here in the States they're becoming extremely hard to find. I was at Home Depot last night, and a woman in the lighting dept told me that come tomorrow they won't even be selling 65w incandescents anymore.

Stores here are still full of them - we'll be able to buy these bulbs for a very long time...

I just got back from ACE hardware store and looked a little more into this. As far as I can tell the ban is only for 40 and 60watt bulbs, 70 and 100 watt already being banned, and does not include any specialty bulbs ie peant bulbs, three way, candelabra bulbs, vintage style etc. Ace had a huge selection of incandescent bulbs. I just ordered a ton of 100watt bulbs in the non frosted variety for a show a few months ago.

Hey Nick,

I was also looking at the 1000bulbs.com site, but you'll see that the bulbs are all back ordered. I'm not sure if that means they'll get them back in stock or not...I ended up tracking down a shop in New Hampshire and bought all their remaining inventory - 200x 100w bulbs for 35 cents/bulb. Then my brother went out to Home Depot and Lowes and bought $500 worth of 65w incandescents since the manufactures are taking them off the shelves as of yesterday.

Yeah but they'll cost 4x as much!

Finally someone who get's the story straight!

Fortunately I live in the rest of the world - outside the U.S. - where we will eventually feel the effects of this legislation, but will continue to have access to true incandescents...

**** As an aside, all - yes all - of the lightbulbs in my house are now LED's, and my hydro bill dropped dramatically ****

Yeah but they'll cost 4x as much!

What will? The LED's? initial cost yes (though all of mine were free from a job for a hardware store CDN Tire) but long term - no scratch that - short term the savings start to add up.

If you are talking about the cost of regular incandescents - that price won't change for a long time. These bulbs will still be made here in Canada, and overseas in China, India, Vietnam, etc and will still be sold here in Canada next week for the same as they were last week.

No Change.

And really - the difference in real terms between a 50 cent bulb, and $1.50 bulb... is for the number you need to buy each year; what one less Latte / beer / hamburger every month? Not really the end of the world or any great hardship to most North Americans.

Right, they'll still be manufactured outside of the US, but there's an import and manufacturing ban in the US...Lol, either way I suppose it's not the end of the world! I use a lot of home made ring lights and covered wagons, so I get a lot of use out of the old style incandescents.

When incandescence is a crime, only criminals will have incandescence…
