Until very recently, significant industry awards like
the Oscars for best Cinematography were only
casually related to the camera brand that was used.
"Casually" because all 35mm film cameras were, more or less,
the same performance wise for any given "format", and each
had to rely on the same very limited number of film
manufacturers out there. Film itself seemed to be the limiting
factor when it came to camera manufacturer's claims over imagery.
However, the most significant difference is that these cameras
were so out of reach of the masses, that the spin offs were
small compared to today's empire building potential.
Now the best cinematography award (when it is awarded to
a digital acquisition production) has much more residual
meaning when it comes to the makers of camera being used.
It's still early in the game but as camera manufacturers like
RED gear up to release newer innovations with "unique"
characteristics, and the "better dead than RED" type rhetoric
heats up, how long will it be before these same companies
begin to infiltrate the already politically charged nature of
Awards ceremonies and Film Festivals, and so on?
Could it go as far as to deny SS an award because he's a RED,
in favor of SS because he's a Green? Surely not
Maybe Jim should create a covert ministry of entertainment.
Or maybe that's what he's already doing, overtly.
