Hi all, I'm just getting into licensing footage for advertisements, etc. and I'm looking for advice on pricing.

Recent request: 5-second clip from this video for an broadcast tv advertisement, worldwide, 1-year non-exclusive.

Here are the 3 points of reference I've found on pricing:
  • A similar rights managed clip from Getty goes for ~$4k
  • fotoQuote software suggests $3500 for 10 seconds
  • Someone I reached out to with similar footage charges $45/second for broadcast use, so $450.
That's quite a range. Any advice on what to ask for? For the time being I've asked this client what they typically pay under those terms.

Thanks in advance.

Well, the obvious answer is to charge them as much as you can get away with, using Getty as point of reference. It will really depend on what the market will bear, in this case, what the client can afford. So just negotiate and see how you do. Some clients know what to expect, some want it for 25 cents.

What is handy about having somebody like Getty represent your footage is that they handle the whole thing including putting it on their database. Even though they take a big bite out of it, they do sell it. I think that is the best way to go if you have a lot of footage and you want to make money from it, without actually going into that business. We have always done well with Getty.
