  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Leverage" Editing on FCPX

Interesting. I often thought, when would they bring out examples of professional editors using FCPx. It's reassuring to see them marketing their professional tools. I miss that. I guess FCPx and Davinci are becoming the standard mix. I've been using Adobe but I really miss the speed of working in prores in FCP7. If only they would do a great compositing app to take on After Affects.

Haha, yes! My favorite shot in those FCPX blurbs is the one of @radical media, where there is someone with an iMac and FCPX's color board loaded... doing absolutely nothing. And right in front of him is the guy with the same shot loaded on the DaVinci!

Well they had one at one point! Shake!

And Motion... well, years ago (circa 2006) some of the developers came to visit our studio and ask us what we'd need to switch over.

"You really want people to switch over? Do something After Effects can't - like real 3D extruded type in OpenGL with textures, bevels and environment maps!" was my answer.

They just laughed at me...

Adobe finally got some of that with CS 6. I would put a smiley face but thats not the kind of update I was looking for.

And, since they are shooting R3Ds, maybe Apple will (please, please, please) be motivated to finally get us native handling of those files!!!
Of late I got into the RCXPro to FCPX using ProRes4444 at 4K and loving it. I guess if FCPX was my only choice here Id be hoping for the R3D option :)

Yeah, to be honest, I don't think an early transcode to ProRes, after a RCX one-light, is all that bad of an option.

Depends on the project. Not all projects are done with a Hollywood scope where im at ;)

Second this one. Just about to go into grading on a student project I shot for some friends who are graduating this year, and a DP I know was gracious enough to loan his Epic to the production. Editing in Premiere off of the R3Ds was a lifesaver - we're all working off of Macbook Pros, no access to a Rocket. In the days it would have taken us to transcode all of the material to ProRes LT 1080p or 720p at 1/2 Res, our Editor already had an assembly cut, and started on a rough cut - and even knew some shots we wanted to get in pickups/reshoots. Not to mention the drive space (and so money) saved...

I completely understand transcoding for edit (and sometimes for finish), but having the option to edit natively is godsend for some productions.

EDIT: For contrast - a music video I worked on with that DP over a weekend tied up his 17" MBP for four continuous days transcoding the material to Full Res 1080p ProRes4444 - to be edited and finished in that format (shameless plug here). Granted most of the footage was high-speed (4K 120 and 2K 300), but that's time that could've been spent editing.

Kevin thanks for your positive post on your workflow and experience.
This is the kind of topics and replies I like to see/read all the time :)
Helpful no matter what the tools are used with no "my stick is bigger than yours" crap.
