Again, which is why Letus using Panavision gears really means nothing. But you said GEARBOX, which is a completely different statement, and does mean something, and is WRONG.

GEAR does not equal GEARBOX.

For you maybe, For ME and I believe for Letus good gears means everything. Ask Letus or us that we have preordered Letus FF for months what is the reason that Letus delayed their production....

Gears !! They couldn't find a trustable constructor for gears and all that they received thay were not perfect as they wanted.And finally turned to Panavision and they really had it.

Not to be a party-pooper, but the reality is that given the space constraints in a follow-focus, there isn't much high-tech gearbox design you can do either. The parts in a PV FF are certainly top-notch, and I'm sure they take a lot of care in assembling and servicing them, but the actual core engineering involved in all these transmissions is freshman-level and could be learned in short-order off the internet, if one were so inclined.

What makes FF design often esoteric is the need to understand where the engineering constraints force choices between compromises in the entire unit, and picking the right compromises to support your feature set. It's unlikely that there would be much cross-over in this area between the two designs, because the PV FF has a different transmission ratio (at least I've never seen a PV FF with 1:2 inpututput) and markedly different space, mounting and modularity requirements. For example, you don't need to have a removable driver gear with a PV FF, which allows you to do some interesting things elsewhere. This however does not apply to the unit in question, which does have a removable driver gear and will thus not be able to get those advantages, same as any other unit with a removable driver.

Whatever the unit in question has in common with a PV unit, the main issue is: there's simply no black magic to be had in these things. The same old rules always apply. Try before you buy.

Seriously man, this is kinda ridiculous. I'm trying to point out so it's clear to everyone else that the Letus follow focus DOES NOT USE A PANAVISION GEARBOX as you stated. You keep turning it around and implying that there's no difference between using Panavision gears in a non-Panavision gearbox and using a Panavision gearbox.

I also explained my interpretation in more detail because there's 2 ways to interpret what you said, mainly because you said GEARBOX and not GEARS. Here's what I said:

There's way too much hype going on in equipment manufacture these days. Some of it is based on grains of truth, most of it isn't. There's enough misinformation and misconception in this thread alone to fill a bushel basket.

Again, the best policy is: try before you buy. If you can't manage that because of location or circumstances, write the company reps asking for detailed comparison info between the products you may be considering. Paradoxically, an solid company with a solid product base will be doing enough business such that they won't really need your business in particular, and will give you the honest skinny because they don't want you coming back and fussing. It's the companies on shaky ground that need to rely on leaving out info and rely heavily on stuff that isn't tangible.

Thanks for weighing in, Jim. Totally agree on the try before buying. It's too bad though, that these parts are such specialty items that trying before buying can be an incredible inconvenience for most of us not living in LA/NY or similar areas. For me, it took calling Letus up and making sure their return policy supported my intentions, putting the cash on "hold" for the duration of the test and wasting a few bucks on the return shipping. All in all, a pretty big waste of time and effort considering that all I got out of it was the knowledge that this (Letus's) follow focus is NOT what I wanted.

For Letus's part, I want to reiterate that they were nothing but courteous and speedy in their responses. They gave me absolutely no greif during the return process, and if they were to eventually make a follow focus that fits my needs, I'd definitely feel good about doing business with them. They're a great company in my book.
