  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Loving everything I'm seeing/hearing in this thread as I ordered the Hotlink and will be getting the Foolcontrol for iOS when it's released. Am anxious to see how it works ergonomically for focus pulls.

Scott, were you going to try to pull your own dynamic focus on the iphone or was that more just to have camera control handy? One thing this combo would open up is the ability to use a monitor other than a RED touch (if you wanted something higher res for focus . . . not counting the new RED 7", as it's going to be a while before I can afford that!) To have a small wifi touchscreen that puts all the controls and menus within a few swipes is terrific in and of itself.

Hi Elizabeth,

What you see on my photo is a screen capture on equal size card that was handed out by foolcontrol at the the Red booth, look on the foolcontrol thread for shots of the follow focus page and imagine it on the right handle.

Ok, the real scoop. I went back and forth from the Tilta booth where they had the three motor controller that is up for a group buy, to Red with Foolcontrol. As I have cn e primes and zoom I really want a three motor controller, but no way is that and the 30-105 cn e zoom going to be hand holdable on the Helix.
I do want the Tilta for the CN Es and sticks, but....

.... the surprise of the show for me was that I preferred the feel of the Foolcontrol on the ef lenses to the Tilta, and it is only going to get better.

Mikael is a flat out genius and his device is really Fullcontrol.

With Reds Dragon and Mikael, and Mark at OffHollywood, and le at Letus we are going to have a hell of "I can shoot what I feel and see" device.

Hi Scott,
I am wondering why you can't use the CN-E primes with the Helix. The CN-E primes weigh around 1.1-1.3kgs which is about 300-400 gm more than the Canon EF 24-70 f2.8

Yeah the way I worded it was a bit either or. I should have said- hand controllable. I do plan on using the primes on the Helix. It is just that with something like the Tilta, it means a second person. What I love about Foolcontrol is single operator and light. The 16-35 f4 is great on the Helix, and is the lens that I am going to first get going once all the pieces arrive.

The 16-35 f4 was our main lens for our recent shoot with the Helix. It really works well. The f4 is a bit too deep of a stop for my liking when trying to throw things out of focus but the focal range is right and the IS smooths out any shake from walking. It's buttery smooth and sharp.
I left it on 5k for most of it and used 6k as an option for the really wide shots at 16mm
I also have a set of CN-E primes im excited to try on the helix.

We used an rt motion for focus, it worked well but we couldn't get the run stop working. Tried the redmote but it was unreliable as usual.
Fool control is starting to look like a viable option for focus and run stop.
Scott, I like the direction you are taking it on the handle. I might have a use for the old iphone yet :)

You can also use a $200 iPod touch. At Photokina I saw, but they wouldn't let you touch the new Tamron 15-30 f.2.8. If it is the same quality as their 90 2.8, which I have and like better than the ef 100 2.8, it will be a must buy, but it is much bigger and heavier than the 16-35 ef f4. I haven't tried the 90 on the helix yet, but if it works, it and the 15-30, and the Canon 35 f2is, and helix would be a killer small, fast iris, setup that pretty much gives you everything you need for soloing.

Nice

Finally a Helix reel. Panning numerous cities in 5 countries, 2 continents. In land, in air with high wind gust, in car, on bike, solowheel, etc. She performed.

Fantastic, Hien! Great stuff, and OMG . . . that shot in Cologne nearly stopped my heart. I hope to shoot at Cologne Cathedral for my film. And even if I don't get the budget for that, I want to visit it before I die.:-)

Hien,
Great to see this reel posted by Eduard Schneider on Vimeo - it demos exactly the conditions you call out with very good results. Without a doubt, she indeed did perform quite well. Nice testimonial to all of your hard work!

I'm really looking forward to seeing something similar but shot with RED cameras in the saddle (all the cameras Eduard used weigh less than the EPIC body).
Fully understand why as some of the shots he captured required a lightweight setup (The Flycam Flowline he used for the helicopter shots is rated to a 16.5 lb payload which leaves less than 12 lbs for the camera setup when using the Helix)

Could you clarify one point - the Vimeo clip states that the Helix "boasts 20 lbs payload" followed by a link to Letushelix.com website.
Reading the specs on both that website and the associated http://www.letushelix.co.uk/helix/helix-specs/ site, the payload is listed at 16 pounds.

This will be very important as we add a lens, wireless transmitter for AC/FF or remote motion ops, motors and other aks to the starting point 5 lb EPIC body.
(Can't quite afford a CF body yet)

Again, the Vimeo clip was very good to see - need to agree with Elizabeth - Cologne looked fantastic.

I'm hoping that other RED Users become inspired to share their results with their Scarlet or EPIC rigs on a Helix soon!!!!

Until all these payload issues get resolved/clarified, the idea of a Carbon Fiber and Switchblade seem to make a bit more sense (cents), depending...

Tank you very much
