  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

That's how mine is right now. Today I got a very good set-up put together along these lines. Further development tomorrow. Stay tuned.

This setup leave you around 1/4" clearance on the bottom. But if you add weight below the roll axis, you can start raising the rig up.

Can someone direct me to any documentation or video on assembly and set up of the Helix? Mine arrived a few days ago and I'm somewhat baffled. Thanks.

LOL, I was sort of flying by the seat of my pants, just starting with balancing with no motors because I knew that had to be done before anything could begin. But today I got an email (apparently along with several other customers) who were inadvertently left off an earlier email containing links to the knowledge base (and eventual manual) that Letus are building. That link is here.

Thanks Elizabeth. You can imagine when I plugged it in and it started doing the electro jig.

Ned - I guess all the gimbal-based stabilizer systems have had their "issues." Movi's seems to be price. BeSteady is managing production/delivery issues. Ronin has suffered a bit from a combination of poor communication and production struggles. Meanwhile, Letus has, perhaps, done a less-than-perfect job of managing expectations.

In the end, I suspect all of these companies will deliver a viable product; at least all accounts would suggest they are capable of doing so. I do think the advantages of the Helix are many, with it's unique design being a key one.

But, another strength of theirs is their business methodology. It has been my experience that they are open and inviting with their communication and extremely responsive to customer feedback. If it feels like we are all participating in a community collaboration in product development, I think that's because it is exactly what we are doing! I am blown away by some of the improvements that have been made, big and small, just since I ordered my Helix. And, because I signed their NDA, I am also aware of some really great things coming in their product road map.

For me, the choice of a "horse to bet on" is quite easy. My unit is already beginning to operate exceedingly well, thanks to a new Profile developed by Hien in the last few days. There are still quite a few tweaks that can be made to improve things further but this is going to be one hell of a tool, and very soon. As a RED owner, who knows what it is like to be in perpetual development, I encourage you to stick with it. I think you'll be glad you did.

Anyone up for scheduling a Helix Users Group (HUG) gathering at next year's NAB?

+1

Oh, and I love the idea you floated a while back of a HUG. Gives "group hug" a new meaning. :-)

The design of the Helix is different than other gimbals and hence should give certain benefits when the gimbal is working in an optimum manner. Software is a big part of it which needs time to develop. So I won't be surprised if the Helix keeps on improving.

Apart from the above, the leader of Helix (Hien) comes out as confident, humble and ready to listen to ideas and improve. In another thread when one customer of Helix was not inclined to do a Mirror test, Hien immediately responded by saying that he is ready to do and share that test. He doesn't seem to try and hide any deficiencies. So this honest approach is good for customers. I am not yet a customer, so I don't have any cognitive dissonance and have no need to defend Helix at the drop of a hat. Hoping for a long wheel base Helix soon. :)

Finally, a way to get a Yokie gimbal at eye-line ;-)

You mean other then the inverted up-side-down mode?

eyeline.jpg

To bring your gimbal to the true eye-line you would actually have to raise your hands to the same exact level as the handles share the axis with the tilt...
On the "Yokie" on the other hand you only need to mount the camera up-side-down to begin with and still maintain comfy arms height.
But even without reversing the camera the angles are more comfortable on the "Yokie"...
What is great on the Helix is that you can hold it closer to your body...

Pick the features you boast about carefully, you are not doing Helix any favours...

Come on guys

What Hienle says. Please stop this race and concentrate in making the best out of both devices guys. There isnt a perfect tool build yet that can do everything 100% for every single shot one needs.

Its pretty amazing what is already has been achieved , and when people get experience in using those tools, they will be both great.

Every device, including steadicam, remote heads, moco, has a learning curve, and also pros and cons. Lets make the best out of it.

kind regards

Peter, will you do a mirror test?
Hienle will do one.
Perhaps Zeb could think about doing one to with a slightly different setup.

Absolutely Joel, just waiting for my cam to return from long-term rental. I might be able to rent another sooner. Will post as soon as I can...
