  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

... If a simple lens with no focus motors or the motors don't get repositioned then a minute with practice. ... .

Yay! Thanks Zeb, I´m getting more and more ready for this. This was an elaborate answer ... and the emphasis of a steady-system. I was already thinking about the longer takes. T

With gimbals . . . screw-in ND's are your friend. Flying a full matte box is a non-starter without an arm IMHO

Light weight zooms will be the ticket to reduce downtime for dynamic shoots with spontaneous DP's. The new Canon 17-120mm is a thing of interest although front heavy. Maybe my little Angie 16-42 will make a come back after being obsoleted by 6KFF and Motion Mount ;-)

As much as all of us are drooling for footage, I have a easy question about re-balancing time. How long will it take to change lens and be up and running again. This should be answerable much sooner than questions about actual performance in the field. Thanks to all of you pioneering this and posting results. :) T

If you have the 4th axis inverted on a stable base, slip the 3axis unit in, change lens, adjust for and aft, lift out, continue shooting. About a minute.

You guys don't mind losing 1.5 stops in the dark? I'm really torn on motion mount...

Thank you,

Absolutely. My friend Joe Victorine swears by the MoVi + Motion Mount combo.

The only zoom I've been able to use @ different focal lengths on M10 without rebalancing is sigma 18-35 T1.8. All others like Canon 24-70mk2 change COG too much for gimbal to handle.

Thank you,

I wonder there are no configuration photos of the Helix in this thread. It´s in the hands of several users since a couple of days...would be great! Thanks.

You mean something like this?

Truth is, I think we are all still playing with things to figure out what we like best.

Is it possible to use it only with 2 axis (one axis blocked). For steadicam I would love to use the horizon and the tilt balanced and be able to panning with the sled.

That is a thing of beauty. Does anyone know what the 4th-axis mounted on a steadicam arm look like?

Using the single axis has been discussed a lot - and on my list of things to try. I think 2 axes might be even better - albeit a bit heavier - but, again, in due time.

I can test for you but my initial thoughts are that the 70-200mm is the max for the current design. The 1Dc is better because it gets the weight back in the sled and toward your body. Hein is working on something grande for bigger applications . . . including a fully loaded RED
Thanks. Hopefully Hien will come out with a version which can help in mounting longer teles.

Order placed! any updates from the few out in the wild? Terry? Scott? Scott? Scott?

Now that its been a few days with them, have you had a chance to mess around? Any thoughts? This is a big investment into something I have not even seen proper Epic footage from, I think we are all eager to see.
I decided to jump on board due to Hien and the whole Letus team attitude, there is really something special happening there and i'm excited to be a part of it.

I'll get some footage up as soon as mine comes. Could be another week or two, fingers crossed it comes early.

If anyone wants to play around with it here in Vancouver, PM me.

Evening Guys,
I've been busy shooting with the Helix over the last couple days. It has been a bit of a challenge with the weather but I've got enough footage now to put together an edit over the holiday weekend. I'm working closely with the good folks at Letus and can say that the little gem is getting dialed in. My shooting style has been to take it to the edge of application to stress test it to uncover any flaws or discovery application opportunities. All good

Once I get an edit that represents the capabilities of Helix and doesn't embarrass me (wink) I'll post 'er up!

Cheers and happy 4th!!
