  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Yes somebody else suggested that. I'll have a look. The Sony DC connection is such a stupid design. It's like they forgot about it until the end; "oh, just stick it out on the back."

I pulled the trigger and put the deposit through. We've always had good experiences with Letus going back to the start of the 35mm DOF adaptors. Hien, although I am in REDland, PLEASE, please, please test the Helix on the F5/F55 during the next few weeks development stage for compatibility. Looking forward to what's next.

Peter, I think you can also take the V-lock "module" away and connect your XLR directly to the cam. Pat

OMG you are absolutely correct. I just removed the V-lock adaptor and there is a secondary 4-pin XLR connector flush-mounted directly in the camera body. This reduces the camera length to more Epic-like dimensions. Thanks so much for picking up on this.

PS: watch out reconnecting the "module" as the connecting pins are really thin and can break.

Hien can better answer the sizing questions with the Sony so I'll leave that to him. We are working with the F5/F55 in mind. I don't see why the current Helix wouldn't work in some form.

For the battery, if you want to do hand off moves, my personal plan is to have a little 3 cell LiPo battery. I fly RC helicopters so I have a bunch laying around. Although most of the time I plan to use an AB battery on a belt, a "hand off" shot can easily be accomplished by simply attaching a small battery to the Helix itself for said shot. You aren't going to be locked into any one particular powering solution. Use what works for the shot you need.

Anyone who has worked with Letus in the past knows we go to crazy lengths to find solutions for customers. If we don't have what you specifically need right out of the gate, we are always willing to work on customized solutions. RU members will play an integral roll in the continued development of the Helix line. More information on that will be provided soon but first we need to get this bad boy out the door and in your hands!

For the RU buy, the little anodized parts should be RED, not blue.

And on a more serious note, I'd love to know more about the joystick, RC and iOS controllers/systems. Even if it is just preliminary.

+1

Curious about how Letus plans to incorporate this stuff

The mere mention of battery belts in conjunction with the gimbal is without a doubt depressing. PLEASE, come up with clean, non-bootleg belt less system that incorporates standard V or AB Mount batts. Could it mount on the back post? This kind of standardization and ability to keep the number and variety of batteries and chargers to a minimum is crucial on the field.

Let's stop talking about battery belts as any kind of solution already. Having to use B Belts is an absolute deal breaker for me and I'm sure many others.

Ned - you do realize that the power will be fed to the camera via the slip ring on the back, right? As a result, the battery belt - if that is the choice one makes for power - will have no potential for causing imbalance in the unit. I am not questioning your personal preference, just want to clear up any concerns on that front.

As for a battery belt vs hanging the batteries on the unit, my RED bricks weigh a ton and I would rather not add that weight to the unit. That's just me.

+1, And this whole power concept is a great solution for the one axis gimbal on a steadicam sled.

Well, it looks like there are 2 groups of people who have different preferences about the way of mounting the battery. One apparently likes the off system tap and the other likes it to be on the system. For those that want the off system tap, instead of the $10 belt clip, we will get you a $160 custom backpack the was made for the action cam situation which has industrial velcro fully lined inside (of course only free for RU's early adopt program). For the group that wants the whole system included, I am working on a way to mount a 4S battery with custom arrangement so it fits on the back without covering the buttons on the bottom. There would be then a lipo to lemo short cable included (again, only for RU early adopters). You can choose one option or the other.

Not sure how a Vmount battery on the back would affect weight, Both in arm/operating and balance, motor strength, but if the gimbal/ operator could handle it for long periods, it would be great to have more mounting options where the cold shoe is. From what I understand, the cold shoe is mounted with one 1/4 20 bolt, leaving the female hole if removed. It wold be fantastic to have a few mounting options up there. Perhaps a small plate with at least 4 x 1/4 20 holes and a 3/8 hole in the centre. This would allow the mounting of a battery system or anything else including a cold shoe mount, or wireless transmitter.

On another note. Could we not put the red brick flat on top of the Epic? this might remove some of the the "antenna" weights as it would bring the COG of the camera up. This may allow for the extra weight of the battery. just a thought.

It's not a bad thought. You can then tap it off and supply power for the Helix since it direct connection with the board from the camera side lemo.

Hienle, Can you give me the Lemo (type) and pinout of the Helix on the backside. I want to prepare some Lipos with Lemo connectors.

Ned, I'm all for options and versatility, so definitely with you on the desire for a way to mount conventional batteries to the Helix through something as simple as tapped holes on the back surface(s) to mount your own solution, which can be as minimal or as elaborate as you like. But I think your last paragraph is definitely limiting and certainly not reflective of my own attitudes. Having a belt solution is a HUGE plus for me, and I think there are many, many situations where a solo shooter would consider it ideal.

So that means that if you elect to use a V-mount battery on the camera side itself, you can run a D/P tap to 2-pin lemo off of that and power the Helix and its motors? That is VERY cool and should alleviate Ned's concerns entirely. I was under the impression that you could only power the Helix from the back side, meaning that power for the camera would have to also come from that same battery (or from a REDvolt if you elect to power them separately).
