  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Is there a way a way to have 5v power and HD-SDI? Lots of people here use Paralinx or similar wireless video which is HDMI based and needs 5v power and if you throw the 1-axis gimbal on a Steadicam sled then you need an HD-SDI feed to the monitor at the bottom of the sled.

I already asked this to Hienle too.. to keep a clean rig this would be essential.
I think this will mean that there needs to be a different slipring in it. (at least). So this could have consequences design wise...

Can't afford it at the moment. Will have to wait. Very keen to get a 1 axis setup but I won't be one of the first it looks like.

Terry, we will discuss more but the custom case *may* be an option. The biggest thing is getting a jump in line :) But we are still working out all of the numbers on this end. $105 isn't much but we don't have traditional pricing to start with. There isn't as much "meat on the bone" as some companies have in their product pricing.

Anyway, we will of course look at any way we can to help out. We still need to finalize some prices on this end before we can lock anything in for a group buy. The current offer is the starting point. The main thing you are getting now is early access. We'll keep working on a way to sweeten the deal for our friends here!

I know we are about 3 weeks out on the CNC parts as of right now. Mid to late May should be a safe estimate on ship date if everything stays on track.

I think you guys are straight shooters and are being fair. Let us (Letus, get it) face it, you have a really hot product in a very hot space. I think all of us here at RU want you to be successful with this and so I think we will "play ball." Of course, any way you can see to sweeten the deal without hurting your company, we would welcome!!

EDIT: If there is any way I can help you promote it here in the SF Bay Area, let me know. (Now that I've got my reserved place in line! LOL)

You no love me anymore Terry? I'm loving the innovation and competition that serves the RU's community!!

Haha - you have every person in the world signed up to get the Ronin. I think you are masquerading as 150 different people. LOL

I think it would be worth the effort for them to find a solution because Steadicam operators will be all over the 1-axis version.

Yeah, I was expecting the Group Buy price to be lower. It really would be worth knocking the price down a bit because as soon as these get out in the wild, assuming the gimbal lives up to the hype, every Steadicam op is going to want one. And these Group Buys are a great way to get new products on film sets fast and get people talking. Which is why the discounts are usually substantial.

I use an Anton Bauer Dionic 90 mounted to a cheese plate that I clip on my belt. That's a nice clean way to power it without having to carry the weight of the battery on your arms.

The battery belt/backpack option while perfectly fine is not really the ultimate ideal for truly flying with this new tool.
This is why everyone is useing LiPo's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_polymer_battery

Shane isn't into it either...using Lipo's on latest film.
This is where the Gemini knocked it out. I did not want to have to tether a Codex S recorder in a backpack. That would defeat the purpose of this wonderful tool.

You guys should offer all this stuff:
LiPo Battery Meter
LiPo Battery Alarms
LiPo Batteries and Chargers (lots of them)
LiPo to P-Tap Adapter (for powering accessories)
LiPo to 2-Pin Lemo Adapter (for powering Redrock)

Brandon - I agree with you about the promotional effect of getting these into the marketplace. Also, I think a solid discount on a group buy is a very psychological thing; it buys a certain amount of loyalty and a real sense of community to those who are involved. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, for shots where you need pass the gimbal to another operator or lower it by a rope the battery pack wouldn't work.

works great on a steadicam as it will be powered off the sled, no need for a battery belt. Personally I have a budget of around $2000 for the thing though and times are tight otherwise i'd grab one.

Absolutely. It also creates a sense of urgency with potential buyers.

I am going to stick a lipo or v-mount to the back anyway. I really want to 'fly' it without the belt battery / cable.
(How I don't know yet... but we'll get that figured out)

Now that we are getting into the nitty-gritty, I am trying to figure out how I'll set this up. I'd like to use the Zeiss glasses as a monitor but those are HDMI and I am feeling it would be less than ideal to start hanging wires directly from the camera. Of course, as I posted a couple dozen pages back, a Lemo pass through for the Touchscreen would be nice. :-) Figuring on focus via a Redrock Remote or the RED Bridge as that technology matures.

Would love to start hearing about the iOS app to control it and the RC joystick options, etc.

My head hurts.

Yeah, the 1-axis version does not need a battery solution. It's perfect as is. I also think that the battery belt option for the 3 and 4 axis gimbal is great to have (anything to lessen the load) and that it will be fine in most cases. An optional on-board battery pack would mean there are no limits.

I agree about pricing.

A 1/4-20 on the back is just for that. If you look closely under the slipring

You are right... maybe the biggest incentive for the buyer is the "once in a lifetime" feeling. I have participated in several group buys mostly because the lower price reduced my risk; if I was disappointed that the product didn't meet my personal needs, I figured I wouldn't lose a lot in the resale. I guess the risk is lowered by having the deposit be refundable.
