  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Still one of my fave videos and wished Jason has time to do the second installment or some info on his findings months after taking flight with the Helix :)

I think Frank Weeks posted a footage of the Helix 1axis on Steadicam sledge. Edi's Helix reel use the 4axis on the Helicopter. Frank used his with a RED. Edi used the BMCC with the helicopter shot.

Yes GT. We use the single axis helix on a pro line steady cam sled. It was our first attempt at the Tennessee Alabama football game a couple weeks back. It wasn't perfect but we were quite pleased with the outcome. The link is on post 2058.

I'm also trying to decide between Ronin and Helix. Price and the lack of footage out there has kept me away from the Helix. weight and size has done so from the Ronin. It's been a tough choice that I should be making this week.

Helix is far superior IMHO...

Thank you,

Frank you had yours on a single axis I do believe.

Have you tried it with out the post and straight on to the arm?

Just need a professional steadicam operators take on this style of shooting.

I have both. Want to buy a slightly used Ronin?

Strange, I Google the Helix and Steadicam and nothing comes up in images and video.

I would like to see more footage with this configuration too. (i talk about the Helix on sled, i'm not very interested by the gimbal connected directly on the arm, in this way i think an exo-skeleton is far more interessant).

Why do you think this...? the exo-skeleton seems very up in the air on how it will stabilize footage.
It looks like good idea...but very few people have actually used one.

Exoskeleton has to be more shaky than any kind of steadicam-to-gimbal connection.

Since I posted here last about the trial by fire that was ACL, I've shot 2 commercials, a music vid, and 2 more events with the Helix. It has grown to be an essential piece of kit for me over the past few weeks. I am leaving for another shoot in CA on Thursday and I'm planning on posting some of the footage that I can share from recent work after I get back next week. I will link it here once I've got it uploaded.

I noticed your sig says you're in Austin sometimes? That's where I live. Let me know if you want to check it out sometime soon, I'd be happy to let you get your hands on it and see for yourself.

We have not tried it as a 4-gimbel directly on the arm. We may attempt that this weekend. So many options!

Is anyone working with a Letus rig that offers quick on- and off-tripod transitions? What I'd like is one rig that can be used for locked off and hand-held with a minimum of mechanical puttering needed. I understand the gimbal adds complexity in certain ways but I want to minimize the mounting platform at least. If you have a good dual-purpose rig please post details or better yet a photo.

Do the RRS mounts work? As in a direct connection to the bottom of the Helix?

I use the 4th axis with an RRS plate to the RRS leveling base on a Gitzo tripod. This lets you slip the Helix in to the 4th axis after handheld and lets you use the Helix as an electronic fluid head.

We use the RED QR plate on the Helix sled quite successfully.

Thank you,

Why...does it give you a more detached robotic-like feel to the camera moves ?

No, I use it for expediency. I have the FH 350 that Zeb B mentions above and love it, but when I want to get everything into a backpack, I use the gitzo with the RRS head and leveling base as traditional fluid head, or when I want to use the Helix 4axis leave the Rh 350 head behind to save weight and just use the leveling base. Yeah there is a bit of Daft Punk there.
