Always wanted Red however did not have the budget. So my story began with the 5D, I was one of the first ones in NY. When I did my first local commercials people were impressed with a little help of my creativity my business exploded. One of my First spots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reD7nTp1Zv0&hd=1

At this point a Scarlet cam out, I was the first one in line, when i shot with my scarlet, I ony use 5d for suction cup stuff

People comparing 5d to red footage is BS, 5d is 5d RED is RED, JUST STOP THE BS!!! Those that can't afford red will compare it.

Today I'm an 3 month Baby Epic Owner because of an amazing trade inn Program, when i tell people that after 2 years of owning equipment I send in my cam and get a new one for a full value they say its impossible. Yes it is my friends its RED. I would like to do national car spots/running footage someday but I know with Red and a little bit of talent i will get there.

I'm not here to kiss anyone ass:) Just appreciating the real fact.
Thank you Jannard

Comparing Red Epic footage to anything shot on a Canon is moronic. We have a C500, C300, a C100, a 1DC and many 5DMIIIs. The comparison in pictures is night and day. RED demolishes Canon.

Oh dear. You are not helping the community with statements like this.

I'd say all DSLRs have terrible texture rendition, which makes anyone's skin look more flawed than reality. RAW 5D3 still has this problem, and the dual-ISO only makes it worse. I'm into fine details, into perfection, and so are my clients. I flatly refuse to shoot on any DSLRs for video. I'd go as far as to say that an Epic gives you better results even for stills.

I agree. Look at this spot here (one of the last DSLR shoots we ever did before we switched to RED). Look at the guy in the Mudtruck. His face has all the orange splotches on him that we could NEVER get rid of. It was just weird DSLR artifacting that drove me insane. The shoot came out "OK", but little BIG things like that made that workflow untenable. We've gone RED ever since, and never looked back.

See what I'm talking about here:

I got stuck in post on my first short for way longer than I hoped. Looking at (very well shot) 7D footage for months on end, while my Scarlet got to go out on bits and pieces, experimental FX shoots and the like. I got pretty used to 7D footage, even got to digitally project it in a cinema a few times. It looked really good.

Then I do a bunch of shoots with Hendrix (my Scarlet), some natural light, some daylight shots, all at 4K. The difference is astounding. The point isn't that DSLR footage isn't good, there's plenty of work out there that proves it. For me, the point is that the Scarlet ergo Epic footage is miles beyond that. I'm sure it's only more so on the Epic at 5K etc - pretty much what Brett stated above.

I will eventually post some stills as my handheld work isn't particularly good, but anecdotally, what I've noticed is that MX detail overall is vastly superior, detail in depth leaves anything I've produced before in the dust and skin tones (dare I say it?) are wonderful - never had a problem with that yet. It's been said before, but there's a palpable 'bigness' to RED images. I'm shooting with Canon lenses - a couple of L's, nothing fancy - same as I shot my first short with.

More recently, I directed another short with Hendrix, this needed a lot of tracking and marker removal. Something that struck me as I zoomed in to my footage to stupid levels was that it was devoid of any artefacts. This is more a feature of shooting RAW and lighting, but finally I felt like I had arrived at a point where I was dealing with images of a quality I had only read about in Cinefex. Doing similar on my 7D footage was horrifying.

I'm just an independent film-maker/animation director with an unhealthy fascination in the tech, but as an image creation tool at any price point in it's history, nothing comes close imo. I fully intend to go Epic when circumstances permit, as it blows my mind when I shot 5K time-lapse with Hendriz. I'm glad I had the 7D experience, it got me going and allowed me to shoot some good pictures. It also has allowed me to appreciate exactly what the Scarlet can offer, which is considerable.
