  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Let's say you don't need 3K sometimes...

Before anyone posts a response let me be clear: I am not bitching about the camera. I love it already, worship at the church that sunglasses built, have eagerly awaited a day like this, and want desperately for this camera to go into mass market production (if they can handle that). I have already bought it in my head, and have started saving.

Okay. That's out of the way.

So, let's say you want to shoot a concert, or a home movie, or something that isn't gonna need 3K, something that is flash-bound. The size of the Scarlet seems lend itself for that: It's portable and it fits in your pocket.

Let's say you only want, say, 1080p, 720p or even SD footage, that you want a camera that can do double duty: it allows you to shoot on Peter Jackson's level while at the same time giving the flexibility of a cellphone camera.

Will Scarlet be able to do that? Will it have the option for compressed video and for resolutions under 2K? I know that we are all Gung-ho for 3k, but sometimes you don't NEED 3k.

I'm sure it will have at least 2k and 1080p options.

I just want to make sure there is a mode that allows for casual shooting. That kinda seems to be the whole point of the camera. Plus if you've ever done concerts, you are more concerned with getting the most out of your media.

After all, what's a "Soccer Mom" gonna do with 3K raw footage?

Bear in mind that a Bayer sensor, like Scarlet will have, yields fewer RGB pixels. You need 1.4 to 1.5 more pixels in each direction.

For example, if you want 1920 x 1080 pixels RGB, you want about 2700 x 1500 Bayer.

So 3K is about perfect to wind up with 1920 x 1080.

The point of this camera is taping soccer games in 3K?
It's just not practical.

For taping soccer games and such you can go with a HV20. You'll have a great final result and no workflow problems.

Scarlet isn't a RED HV20.
Even the price range doesn't put it in that place.

I was wondering about this too. Wouldn't shooting 1080 or even 720 on Scarlet look better than any other consumer HD camcorder, given the larger sensor?

Exactly. A lot of people assume that no one will be able to work with the footage because for some reason you are locked into 3k which is NOT the case. I'd probably work at 720p. You can edit 720p AIC on a 9 year old G4 that costs $50 on eBay. There will be many options.

Of course you'd need another machine to transcode, but my point is you don't need an octo mac.

I bet you that when time comes you'll be shooting 3K until it comes out of your hears and you'll feel that the only reason for you to go down in resolution, is for the trade of faster frame rates.

PS....and you'll cry your guts out if you're forced to go down in res for any other reasons, even if it's for flash. Simply because your flash is going to look so good  (added the smiley so you wouldn´t think I was trying to be rude).

Kind regards,

Fredrik

Basically what you're talking about is shooting to a delivery codec, which is what all the present consumer camcorders do.

The great convenience of the delivery-as-acquisition-codec workflow is the instantaneous turn around time of footage. This is why a lot of people with DSLRs still shoot to JPG as opposed to RAW. Everyone knows what to do with a JPG. Unfortunately, delivery codecs usually require significantly more processing to get rid of the extra data in an intelligent manner.

RED's achievement thus far has been to enable the RAW workflow for people looking for the higher quality and post-production versatility it offers. It sounds as if they are developing a delivery codec in RED RAY, and are interested in providing delivery options in camera. I guess we'll see where they go with that.

The soccer mom quote was from Ted Schilowitz. He was quoting about the range of people interested in it due to the size and price.

Here is the point: I don't want to have to buy 2 cameras. I own an HVX currently, and every once in a while I DO shoot on tape (blasphamy though that that might seem to some here) and I LIKE that I have that option there.

Have you ever been hired to shoot a show or skateboarding? For the most part what you want out of shooting like that is the room for a metric shitload of footage. What am I gonna do if I need to offload data 5 minutes into a set? What employer or band is going to take uncompressed 3k footage? And why would it matter if it's going on YouTube or a website anyway?

And look at the design of the camera itself: even it's form factor and design philosophy seems to lend itself to run and gun, on the fly shooting. If I'm just on the street messing around with my camera, I don't want to have to worry about the SD card filling up in 8 minutes, I just want to shoot. And to me there shouldn't be a reason for this option not to exist. Unless I'm mistaken, it shouldn't cost more to make lower res footage an option.

And let's face it: even SD and HD footage will look great coming outta that beast! ::biggrin::

Are you saying that since the camera is not designed with compression as a first thought, it might not be able to?

oh no, 3K for soccer moms and incredible wedding videos; whats the world coming to???? I love it

isn't there a scarletuser . net yet?

Soon my friend.. And forget the .net.. its .com

Now, in regards to having to swap out CF cards every 5 minutes.. This will change in the next year. Expect to see 128-256 gig CF modules (or at least cluster modules) on the market in about a years time. THE memory market is about to boom even more.

I doubt that it will shoot anything under 2K... And even if I was finishing in 2K or 1080p, I'd still shoot 3K, for the little extra DOF, and because the footage will probably look better scaled down (this is my experience with DSLRs at least), and you also have some room to crop.

You mean "less" DOF.

I say if they really want to sell this to soccer moms, they'd better allow for less than 2K recording. They'd likely prefer convenience, deeper DOF, and longer shooting times over resolution or quality.
