  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Let's get this party started! What do you plan to use your Raven for?

lol im editing for dog film fest encoding master prores files while i type this.... the dog market is going strong!

i really wanted to write "amateur porn" but i'm afraid if i get too funny i may get banned lol :p

Deff plan on using as a B-CAM, and for smaller projects I would normally shoot with a GH4 (which is now for sale). Oh and on Big projects that require 2 Epic Dragons this will be my new BTS CAM !!

Travel Cam.

Back in 2003/4 I was excited to get the DVX100 and spent long nights on DVXUSER, thats pretty much when I started shooting.

Roll on a decade and bit, now just as excited about the Raven.

This will be my primary camera for whatever project that suits, brand videos, fashion, music events, corp etc.

I hardly ever need to deliver 5K unless for large screen projection at events, if needed I can hire, but I've always loved shooting RED Epic/Dragon on occasion this will be a better alternative to BM Ursa Mini / Kinemax which where the options UNTIL this was announced.

I woud like to ask something to everybody here. The announced sensor it is the Dragon sensor only cropped to 4K. Higher frame rates. 16.5 stops of latitude and almost half the weight and 1/6 of the price. WHy should we use it as a B cam? I don´t get it. In a world where Alexa shoots 2.8K and gives upscaled 4k why should I get a RED Weapon or even a MX 2nd Hand instead of a Raven? I never needed more than 4K. To be honest the edited contents are stored in 4K but never had a client who asked me 4k final to broadcast...People are talking about Raven as crash cam also as B or C cam. Has anyone noticed that the footage taken with a Raven should be exactly the same quality as the bigger toys? I don´t think many people actually shoot more than 1:3 ratio and not often. In all m jobs shot with EPIC the only reason why I was asked to shoot 5k was because of the crop sensor when resolution is lowered. Like most shoots with Alexa are recorded Prores. This is the sign of the times...RED couldn´t be away from ARRI. The Alexa mini is nothing more than a reason to lower prices...like Raven is not more than a reason to make the weapon affordable. Even shooting at 8k the frame will have to be crop to fit the 16:9 ratio. So why trying to find excuses to become competitive? This is only a sign that manufacturers CAN but don´t supply their cameras at lower prices because they don´t want to...Only when competition gets tighter and breathing down their necks. This works for Sony, Panasonic, Arri, RED , BMD etc...etc... I miss those days (commercialy speaking) when we bought a camera and shot with a top of the range camera for 5 years and then change for a new model. Or keeping it as a B-cam as the image kept on being good to work. I paid for the Raven on the first day and I´ll be waiting for it. Why? Because clients demand it sometimes without knowing why. But still...I can advertise I am a Raven owner DP. It will pay itself in a few jobs just because I have it unlike its bigger brothers which are more aimed at rental houses. Thank you for reading

How many movies you´ve seen on the bigscreen or even imax shot on Alexa? Many....actually hundreds. Do you know an Alexa that shoots 5k? I think I made my point.

+1. 1.5 lbs less than my current Epic body. The specs make the Raven seem perfect for the run+gun docs I'm set for!

I guess it's your decision for yourself.
Some people prefer to shoot S35 format or to shoot @5k or 6k to be able to downscale and get a cleaner image with smaller grain, or a wider FOV, or a shallower DOF, or change OLPF, or use other mounts / motion mount, or need clean keying. I don't get why people are fighting against each other to decide who has the best camera. It sounds like a pissing contest sometimes.
Since the Raven was announced, the big red boys are bashed a lot. And it's obvious that many people who are bashing them don't know much about cinematography, cameras or red. If you're happy with a raven @4k that's great. You can use it as a A cam. You can make fantastic work with it, like you can make fantastic work on an iphone or a Ursa or whatever if it suits your purpose.
But you have to accept that the high end red cameras make better images than the raven regardless of the quality of this cam. I've got a scarlet dragon and i don't think it's doing better images than the epic or the weapon, i can't shoot 6k or super low compression and the final quality is obviously inferior but we can still make incredible work with it.

It's about the sensor size, the pixels size. Not only resolution.
And the audience is used to S35. The cinematographers too. Working on a smaller sensor change many variables: the depth of field, the field of view, the perspective. There are reasons why people want a S35 sensor or even bigger and more Ks: to be able to reframe in post, for artistic choices, ..... What if you want to stabilize or reframe a bit your shot with the raven? You end up upscaling the image if you need a 4k output. Without even mentioning the debayering resolution loss.

A cam for automotive videos, product videos, and short docs. All broadcasted via the web or at events. Sometimes the occasional broadcast. Really excited to join the RED ecosystem with this cam.

Hey guys, been coming here forever but this is my my first actual post on Reduser. Located in Boise, ID, I had my own little production company here for a few years until March when I accepted a full time gig building the video production department at a company called Western Power Sports/FLY Racing. We do a ton of action sports stuff like motocross, mountain biking, BMX, and snowmobiling, as well as some studio/product stuff such as riding gear and hard parts. Currently, my kit is (2X) GH4 with Olympus M.Zuiko glass, and the Panasonic HC-X1000.

I put a deposit down on the Raven/Jetpack package around noon the day it dropped. Also, this week I plan to pre-order the Panasonic AG-DVX200. Once I have the new cams, I'll be getting rid of the HC-X as well as one of my GH4s. For the time being, Raven will be my A cam and DVX or GH4 will back up depending on project. Eventually I plan to add a second Raven to the mix and get rid of the remaining GH4.

Right now I have a Ronin-M and I am really hoping it will support the Raven. Any thoughts on that? I saw the pictures of it on Ronin, but I don't believe it was the M version which has me worried. I think they would have used the M if it were possible. We'll see I guess.

No matter what, I'm losing my mind excited about finally shooting RED. I know it's going to step up my production in a big way, give me options I've never had before, as well as allow me to be more creative.

Depending what RED does in the next 5 months I might honestly turn this into my primary camera. I have an Epic Dragon currently. However if I can bring my overall cost of ownership down and still deliver 4K i'm in a perfect world. This very well might be my A cam come March if nothing comes in right between the Weapon and Raven.

Welcome!

Your M will work just fine. I use my Epic Dragon on my M.
