I noticed that there is more highlight detail in the red LCD than in the EVF. The image on the EVF seems to blow out more. Has anyone else noticed the same with theirs?

I have heard so many differing reports on the EVF.

I have a couple of months before my camera is up, the two times I have put the RED through it paces I was on a LCD.

Are the EVF units very different one from another in image quality?

I think i will get one but the amount of forums that differ in there opinion of the EVF is staggering

The benefits are almost all there for the EVF. It's sharper, cleaner, and the color and image are truer. I'm not sure if other people have noticed issues with the highlights in their EVFs. Beside the flicker, which you could say makes it feel more like an optical viewfinder and the slight highlight issue I'm having, it's image is superior to the LCD in every way.

I truly prefer the EVF in every way. The LCD is nice but I have a hard time deciding which angle to view it at. For me it seems to be very sensitive to viewing angle. The EVF is a must for serious work.

You can enable the OPEN GATE setting if you don't like the flicker. But it will affect other outputs too.

btw:
i have a 3 second blackout when turning off magnification on the evf (only in 4k) - i asked some other guys with a cam an they havent had this effect.
it also blacks out when going to playback mode...

Yes, same intermittent blackout effect. Freaked me out at first, now I expect it! ;)
Easily the best electronic finder I've personally ever looked through. I prefer it in every way to the LCD (which remains a good tool for the AC, accessing menus, etc.)
Cheers,
Harry

Same blackouts here. Hope this will be fixed by software.

I have a weird problem that in some situations all the highlights turn flat gray. So much even that the "ok" button after formatting is hardly readable. I have yet to contact RED about the issue (in the middle of a production right now) but I am afraid that I have to send it back. Maybe there are more people with this problem. Do the highlights sometimes seem right and sometimes flat/polarized/gray?

I have the same blackout with the EVF as well. It reminds me of switching from SDI and Red LCD in pre 15 builds.

Like I said, in every other way the viewfinder is superior. But the highlights do act a little weird. Luckily I already have the LCD to check for highlight detail. I have noticed that the EVF does solarize a little, but so far, not as much as I have heard from others. At least not enough to return it.

strange evf "false color" look in low light

strange evf "false color" look in low light

while we're on evf idiosyncrasies...has anyone experienced a solarized evf when used in very low light shooting? i was doing a car interior at night with only streetlight and the evf looked as if false color was always on-it was completely unusable. so i switched over to the red lcd and that looked fine. there was still banding on the lcd but it was so much more prominent on the evf and somewhat colorized too. i never sent the evf in for repair because it has never done that again.

Thanks for the tip. I'll watch out for that.
