  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for scarlet?

I wouldn't consider B4 mount lenses as a real option. B4 mount lenses are made for cameras with a beam splitting prism in front of the 3 CCD/CMOS array of sensors. The scarlet won't have one of those.

There's a B4 converter that RED sells for RED ONE, so I think they'll probably make a mount for Scarlet. Since it needs optical elements for the correction it's pricey compared to the other mount options though - but still would be worth it if you have a significant amount of money invested in B4 mount glass.

I have been mostly collecting used 16mm zooms over the last year or so with the intention of shooting comprehensive chart and field tests on the 2/3" cinema to give people a good idea of how these will perform. I have mostly stuck with zooms as that is what I use and also decent new zooms will be quite expensive by comparison to the used versions. Some of the lenses I have acquired so far:

Angenieux 12-120 T2.1 c-mount, a late model version of this classic
Angenieux 15-150 T2.8, neutral mount, will need to be converted for use. Covers super 16mm and has a reputation for being among the sharpest of the older Angenieux's.
Angenieux 12-240 T4.2-5.6 in Arri B mount, will adapt to PL mount
Angenieux f2.2 17-68, a very common older compact zoom for c-mount 16mm cameras
Schneider f2 16-80mm c-mount, very nice fast lens, have also seen 18-90mm versions.
Canon f1.8 25-100mm, older TV lens for 1" vidicon B&W C-mount cameras.
Cooke 9-50mm T2.5 Arri B mount. Top of the line premium 16mm glass in its day. Several RED users are shooting 2k with these on RED 1.
Rank Taylor Hobson 8-24mm f1.6 fast wide zoom in c-mount. Very rare apparently.

Very much looking forward to shooting with these and sharing the results.

David, just to let you know you're not alone, I've also bought quite a few c-mounts over the last year or so and have several of the same lenses:

The Angenieux 2.2/12-120 (Arri Std. Mt with C-mount adapter)
Angenieux 2.2/17-68, c-mt.
Schneider 2.0/16-80 and 2.0/18-90, both c-mt.
Kinor 2.5/10-100, converted to PL mt. (not sure how well though!)
and some older Canon, Fujinon and Kowa TV zooms picked up cheap.
I also have a decent selection of c-mount primes: Schneiders, Carl Zeiss Jena Tevidons, older Cosmicars etc.

I too look forward to testing them, sharing results and comparing notes.

I have a couple of Cosmicar primes too and an interesting Elgeet 5mm F1.5 super wide that is bigger than a 12-120. Like to get some of the ARRI Schneiders or Zeisses. Have you noticed how c-mount primes have been going up significantly since the GH1 came out?
Definitely have to compare notes. Now all we need is a Scarlet eh?

BNC-R or BNCR is not a mount that RED is going to make. They already announced the mounts: Nikon, Canon EF, PL, and RED mount. But once the Scarlet comes out you should hit up Visual Products to see if they will convert their existing RED BNCR mount to a Scarlet/EPIC BNCR mount. It shouldn't be that hard for them to modify their currently available mount.

I have a few BNCR lenses myself, and will certainly add my voice once these cameras are released. We all know that BNCR is a great, strong mount.

That is presuming that RED will allow third party mounts for epic and scarlet, and I think they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't continue allowing *qualified* 3rd party manufacturers to make mounts for their cameras.

Hi Brandon,
Does it say that BNC-R lenses will be supported on the Scarlet ? You mention BNC-RC-Mount. I suspect it was intended to read BNC-R, C-mount. I was aware of the C-Mount but not a BNC-R option. That would be really cool since I have a nice set of Super Baltars for my Mitchell and it would be great to be able to use them elsewhere.
Where is this info posted ?

Bill

I would think dumb mounts for Scarlet/Epic, no electronics, will be much easier to produce. Red doesn't seem to restrict 3rd party accessories that don't risk damage to the camera.

I plan on doing this too with the Red Mini-Primes to see which lenses can create the sharpest image at the widest aperture.

I may also test it out with my school's Zeiss 16mm Primes.

That Elgeet must be quite a monster - interesting indeed!
Yes, I've certainly noticed the prices, especially for the brighter 25mm primes. I started buying in December 2008, just in time before the prices started to go up. The early G1 c-mount users seem to have started around January 2009 but the prices didn't really start to soar until April/May I think. I was lucky to get quite a few lenses before then - the Tevidons particularly: they would cost me a lot more today.

The 20mm, f/1.7 lens from Panasonic sounds like something that would be good for a Scarlet, would it? I have that for my GH1.

I got a ziess 20mmF2 that should be great too. But I'm curious of my Sigma 8mm.
