I know the camera hasn't been release, but i think this question may be able to be answered. I am wondering what kind of lenses can be used on the scarlet? I know it can take Nikon, Canon, etc. Does that mean it can take any lens from a DSLR (CMOS), up?
Thanks.

As long as you have a mount or a mount adapter, you can put any lens on it that'll fit.

Nikon, Canon, RED, Panavision, Zeiss, anything.

Now whether a lens will be good for the camera or not will be a different story. For example you wouldn't want to put a 35mm lens on a 2/3" Scarlet because your wide lens will become a telephoto lens.

Jerrod, thank you for the info. Do you have any suggestions for affordable lenses for the Scarlet, say between $400-$1K. my main intention for the scarlet is for shooting video.
Thanks again!

if that is your budget just go with the fixed lens version. That fixed lens will be miles better then any 400-1000 dollar lens you will find unless you're talking about the S35 model scarlet.

for now, we know we can use at least B4, BNC-RC-Mount, Canon EF, Canon FD, Contax/Yashica, Leica M, Leica R, mini-RED(when they come out), Nikon, OCT-19, Panavision, PL, RED-Mount

Hi Brandon,

Does it say that BNC-R lenses will be supported on the Scarlet ? You mention BNC-RC-Mount. I suspect it was intended to read BNC-R, C-mount. I was aware of the C-Mount but not a BNC-R option. That would be really cool since I have a nice set of Super Baltars for my Mitchell and it would be great to be able to use them elsewhere.

Where is this info posted ?

Bill

Are you sure we could add other lenses?
with red one yes, sure.
but with scarlet i don't know. i would like to add a leica noctilux f1.0.

What do u think about it?

i am wondering if my 1/2" sony bayonet HD eng lens will be able to SOMEHOW attach to a 2/3" scarlet. If it can maintain power for it is obviously important too, but I could just use it manually.

would something like this work? I am still new to lenses for HD chips, i'm coming from the 35mm film days.

i might be willing to spend around $2K if it means not being stuck with a fixed lens.

Sure, that lens should work, and be a pretty nice on at that. The problem is, for the 2/3" Interchangable Scarlet, the 24-105mm gets cropped 2.5x when comparing it to an S35 sensor, making the field of view effective of what you'd be used to from a 60-260mm lens on 35mm. That means you've got no wide angle, much less normal length lens, though you are very well covered in the telephoto department. The fixed Scarlet seems like it'll be a great deal. The entire brain with lens is significantly less expensive than many B4 ENG lenses.
Peace,

There should be a B4 mount to support 2/3" HD lenses, but your 1/2" lens would not cover the larger sensor at the wide end without vignetting. Power is available from the camera for servo zoom controls as with the current RED 1. We don't know if auto-iris functions will be supported for aftermarket HD zooms though.

Best bet for 2/3" zoom for interchangeable model would be used 16mm film camera zooms. $1-2k range will get you a decent fully serviced model from a reputable dealer. These would be both faster and sharper than a lens designed for a 35mm still camera. Whitehouse AV and Visual Products both usually offer a fair selection of used lenses with warranties. These are lenses that would cost in the $10k and up range new.

I believe using a B4 type lens on a non three chip camera requires an additional optical adapter unit.

I am sure any B4 lens mount option will have the necessary optical correction built in. It will also probably be expensive.

I say if you're going for the 2/3" interchangeable wait until the pricing for the mini-RED Primes. They'll produce the best image out of the 2/3" interchangeable, guaranteed.

But also take David's advice on looking at 16mm lenses. Those two options are your best bet.

Super 16mm Optar Illuminas will work perfectly on the Scarlet. These lenses are available in new sets of 6 lenses: 8mm,9.5mm,12mm,16mm,25mm,50mm.

They are highly regarded. Owners of the SI-K2 cams have been purchasing them.

How much for a set of these Fred? I have heard they are really superb lenses.

I wouldn't consider B4 mount lenses as a real option. B4 mount lenses are made for cameras with a beam splitting prism in front of the 3 CCD/CMOS array of sensors. The scarlet won't have one of those.

You should use lenses made to focus an image through air on to a single sensor / film plane, not a prism & CCD array.

Also, I have a 2/3" B4 camera and I'm looking for a lens right now. The "CHEAPEST" B4 HD lens I've been able to locate is about $7k just for the lens, not including whatever contraptions you'll need to make it work on a Scarlet.

I would bet there will be dozens of better, cheaper lens options than B4 mount 2/3 lenses. Guaranteed.

I am going to offer a NEW set of Optar Illuminas to the members of this forum a special price (until the end of December) of USD$13,500 FOB Weston, FL. The lenses come with a one year warranty on parts and labor! Your choice of mounts; Pl or Arri Bayonet. If you do not need the PL mount take an additional $100 off the price of the set!
