I'm not a "shooter" in the sense that most people here are cinematographers etc but I do have a bunch of projects where I would benefit from owning my own camera system. Mostly to shoot interviews, scenery, etc.

So, I want to buy a camera when the new epics are released. In the meantime though, with the Aussie dollar doing so well against the US, I thought maybe I should buy the lense now. I was looking at a RED 18-85 to cover most everyday requirements.

There was mention of 5k lenses so my question is... should I wait and buy everything 5k together or will the existing 18-85 be fine?

From what many users have written, the 18-85 seems to be a very good lens, though keep in mind how big/heavy it is...I own a Cooke 20-100 and the size seems to be very comparable. I only bring this up because using such a large lens as your primary lens will negate the benefits of a smaller/lighter camera setup and make it that much tougher to move around, especially if you're on your own (without an assistant). You'd also need to spring for beefier support.

Have you considered the 17-50? You could then get a Duclos PL-modded 70-200 to get longer focal lengths, and I would imagine the weight of those two lenses combined could be less than the 18-85 on it's own. The Red PL 50-150 is also a popular lightweight lens...

The other route to consider might be Canon lenses with the Epic Canon electronic mount.

Cheers,
Clint

I concur, using DSLR electronic lenses on the Epic with electronic mounts seems the smartest choice for an occasional shooter like yourself.

After that, then the Red 17-50 and a Duclos modded Nikkor PL 70-200 makes sense.

Its not MY first choice, but I don't do what you do.

Thanks.

That sounds like a great option. I have access to Arri Master Primes and Alura zooms as well as Cooke S4's when I need more specialised stuff but for my own daily use the options you have presented will be great... and easier on the wallet!
