  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

[FS: OPTICS] Lens Upgrade (For Still Image Lenses)

I have some of these rings. They are very nice quality and the company a pleasure to deal with.

FWIW, these should also be good for CP Ultra T* lenses for Super 16mm ( close to 2K ) except the 9mm which may vignette and also has a larger diameter front than the other CP lenses. If there is no vignette on the 9mm it would enable a standard size front end for a CP Ultra set.

Michael is excellent to deal with and he keeps his word.

The products are solid, do not be fooled into thinking that because of the very reasonable pricing, that it is low quality stuff.

i have these on my Nikon lenses and when on the FF D700 the lenses will vignette at 17mm, but never on the epic. I just spin them off for stills photos.

Buy with confidence.
peace

Yup I've bought some too, very good.

How do these compare to Duclos step up rings? I appreciate that's it's half the price...

... I'm primarily concerned with the likeliness of stuck filters due to thermal expansion
(don't get me going on my many ole attempts w/ plumbers wrenches to get filters off a lenses)

Also, what metal composition/alloy are these rings made out of?

Thank You

I've got Michael's adapter rings and they're top notch. Haven't yet had an issue with any filters getting stuck with them and I frequently use cheap Chinese step up adapters known to get stuck... no issues yet.

He pushes a quality product, not sure what they're made of, but whatever the metal composition they're great value.

I really like the look of this step up ring, planning on replacing my cheap bought in Hong Kong rings with these. But why does it have that lip on the outside? Would prefer it to be smooth like the Duclos rings. I worry it might interfere with an 80mm clip on matte box, which is what I intend to use...

Thanks for the info Shervin, what about using them in warmer environments?

The Duclos are nice and reliable, but I'd prefer not to spend $400-500 just on step-up rings for a set if i can help it...

...but on the other hand I absolutely do not want to run into problems/delays due to @#$%'n stuck filters. :smash:

Glad you guys liked the rings...

@Ron Steinberg I took the front of Zeiss Ultraprimes as the model for my rings. The "little step" helps to make a perfectly light tight seal. Usually clip-on matte boxes also have a little step inside the receiving ring that would prevent the lens from being pushed further in anyways. Just be careful using clip-on matte boxes with slr lenses since they have usually a relatively week mount.

@Daniel Reed If you want, you could test them for a couple weeks and if you don't like them, just return them (I'll take them back as long as they are still in undamaged condition).

I have Michael's rings and a couple of Duclos as well. Both are great. I clip on my RED Matte Box (80mm Chrosziel adaptor) all the time and have no problem.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the clarification. I noticed the other day when testing a matte box using another direct mounting method on my AI-S Nikkors that it became much harder to turn the focus ring of the lens due to the weight of the box. So it's not only the mount that is a weak point, its also that the focusing mechanism in some of these lenses (Nikkor 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.4 etc) is not designed to carry the extra weight like a proper cinema lens. I know it would be fine for just filters though.

Some people are using them with the LMB-5 but I personally wouldn't use a clip-on matte box heavier than an LMB-3 with an SLR lens. Best is still to use a regular rod mounted matte box, and if you get an 80mm bellow, the Cine Rings will make a perfect seal and lens changes should be quick...
