Can anybody confirm whether you have to turn the camera off to swap lenses? We've not run across any definitive info on this, but I can imagine the two primary issues would be static charge attracting particles and potential burn-in damage if the sensor were directed at a bright light source.

You don't have to power down, but definitely protect your sensor whether the RED is on or off.

i have been wondering the same thing....!
i have been treating my camera as i would my DSLR & turning the camera off when doing lens changes. Static charge etc etc.......
but its a pain in the ass with a 70 sec boot up time after every lens change...!

I haven't powered down and haven't seen any ill effects yet. With DSLR the problem is sensor dust, The red doesn't seem to have the same issue. The filter is fairly far out in front of the sensor so it seems and dust on it wouldn't be in focus enough to be seen. This is just an educated (or not so educated) guess. If anyone has a better answer I'd like to hear it as well.

I never power down either.. It takes too long to boot up.. Usually when I'm on a shoot I just leave the camera on until the battery is dead

It's a very normal practice to swap lenses without powering down. I imagine you'd piss the DP off quite a bit if he/she had to wait 90+ seconds every time he/she wanted a lens change.

Just make sure that you also make use of the other common practice of "checking the gate" every time you change the lens to make sure the senor is clean.

No issues so far when changing lenses with camera on. I tend to use my body to block out any direct sunlight hitting the sensor, though I'm not even sure what the threshold is on that, i.e. how much if any damage can be done this way. I would think that any prolonged exposure might be an issue, but I'm not going to test to find out. It's good practice to check to make sure there are no foreign particles that have made their way onto the OLPF. The sensor itself is sealed, so in theory should never have dust on it.

I searched for awhile before posting the question. Can we please get a lens section sticky on this subject???

Use Google for searching the forum. It's much better than its own search function. Use a search string like site:reduser.net lens change "power down"
