Could someone point me in the right direction to get a proper support for my Nikon 80-200? I'm using 19mm rods with the ET baseplate. I bought a universal mount thinking I could just attach my support that came with the lens, but I didn't think through enough about the fit.

Does someone make an adjustable support for 19mm rods that would work?

Thanks for any help or photos if you have 'em.

if you're handy with a drill, you can make one out of L brackets from home depot. You'd need 2 of them and some wingnuts. Basically one would attach to the lens and the other to the universal mount and where they overlap you would cut some slots so you could move it up or down till it was the right height and then tighten a wing nut to lock it together. I've been meaning to make one for my canon 80-200 but haven't gotten around to it yet and no way to mount the canon on the RED either.

Or you could just have someone machine you a big washer that would close the gap between the nikon's mount and the universal mount. I'm assuming the nikon 80-200 has a similar collar to the canon.

or just stack washers till you get it with a longer bolt.

or buy the nice zacuto thing.

Is the 80-200 a concern without the support? I've been using it without it. I thought it was just under the threshold for supportless lenses. When I had an 18-90 PL mount lens, it obviously needed a support, as do most full range cine zooms.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone for their suggestions. I think I have a solution for my needs. I use the ReallyRightStuff adaptors for my camera gear and what I was wanting was a way to mount my quick release plate onto the Red universal mount so I could just slide the lens support into the plate, clamp 'er down and be done. That way I can use it with both the Red and my Nikons. I'm heading to a local machine shop to get the part made.

when you have a solution made up, we'd all love to see it.

Not the most elagant solution but it, damn cheap, quick to set up and sturdy :

For my 80-200mm I use a simple 1/4 -20 screw thread about 2-3" long. I screw it into a universal mount on the 19mm rods and then screw it into the lens collar of the lens. I use some nuts to make it tight.

That's it, it works a charm.

I'm looking for a correct support for my 35mm Lomo Anamorphic. The lens has a very large face and narrows near the mount as you can see from the picture below. Quite an awkward lens but flares very nice. I'm wondering if the Zacuto support will do or if I have to have a specific support machined for it. Problem is the entire barrel rotates and the aperature ring is right below the barrel so i would have to have the support towards the back of the lens close to the mount which doesn't make much sense. Anyone know? I've called around everywhere.

Ed,

Yeah, that's what I've done for now, but it sure looks, less than appealing. But you're right, you can't beat the price! This solution I'm working on might cost a little or a lot, waiting to hear back from the machine shop. One problem I did notice is the ReallyRightStuff quick release clamp has an offset hole for the center bolt. It's messing up my wonderful idea, but we have a way around it. I'm not opposed to working something up myself, just don't have the tools to align things properly.

Here's what I did

Here's what I did

So I took my universal mount along with the ReallyRightStuff quick release clamp over to a local machine shop and they came up with this. It works fine, looks better than a bolt and allows me to keep the RRS plate on the lens. They bead blasted the part. Sure, it would look better if it were anodized, but I didn't want to spring for it. Paint will have to do for now.
