  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lens shopping...

Hey Jim, how do you think the whole lens situation is going to play out for FF35? Any inside tips on how you think lens manufacturers will respond to Epic and Scarlet FF35?

I don't really understand how the other guys think (and they probably say exactly the same about me)... so I don't really know what they will do or think. I suspect that they will not see Scarlet or EPIC as a big volume threat to their camera program and should be happy if their lenses can be used on our cameras. They make more money on lenses than cameras. But who knows.

I do know that we are really excited about our FF35 lens program and wish everything was done today so I had all the new stuff to play with. But I'm in the same boat as you guys... waiting impatiently.

Please, can someone from RED confirm, that we can record 5k with the RED Pro 18-85mm zoom as well.

Jim and progress/info you could share about the RED mini primes?

Only one right answer: yes.

The right answer is the real one.

We designed the 18-85mm zoom before we decided on the new S35 sensor size. I remember that we grew the image circle some over standard but can't remember exactly to what. Zooms suffer a big penalty for image circle vs. size and performance. Enough talk... we are double and triple checking to make sure we post correctly. Our lens god is gone today.

They are small, sharp and very cool... :-)

Lens development is a slow and painful process. Every lens we have done from scratch has taken longer than planned. Our Pro Primes were supposed to be out last year. I hope we are finally figuring out how to set a more realistic schedule so we more closely hit the published (but changeable) release dates.

Jim,

I seem to remember (please correct me if I'm wrong) that all the S35 and FF35 sensors (whether SCARLET or EPIC) share the same pixel pitch, which would mean that an S35-sized crop on a 6K FF35 sensor equates to the same 5K resolution and area of the full S35 sensor.

If you're referring to the pixel density of each sensor (According to the originally released specs) the densities are:

2/3" Mysterium-X : 3.2 micron
Scarlet S35 M-X : 5.4 micron
Scarlet FF35 Monstro : 6.0 micron
RED One M : 5.4 micron
Epic S35 M-X : 5.4 micron
Epic FF35 Monstro : 6.0 micron
Epic 645 Monstro : 6.0 micron
Epic 617 Monstro : 6.0 micron

I do know that we are really excited about our FF35 lens program and wish everything was done today so I had all the new stuff to play with. But I'm in the same boat as you guys... waiting impatiently.

Some questions about the FF35 lenses. I understand that any camera in the DSMC line up is going to do both d-cinema and stills, but the FF35 is going to be the quintessential brain for both stills and d-cinema.

The S35 lenses are very aggressively priced in comparison to other cine lenses. Where do you expect the FF35 lenses to be priced? You can pay pretty much any amount of money for lenses in both stills and cinema, but it seems that "pro quality" still glass is more inexpensive on the whole than cine glass. Are you going to compete with glass makers on price to win over still shooters that have been using Canon or Nikon glass for years? (Understandably, they can always get a Canon or Nikon mount with their DSMC, but regardless...)

Do you think you will be making still glass that have cine glass features (limited breathing, cine-style rings, etc.), or do you think you will be going a more traditional approach with the still glass?

Thanks. :}

Our FF35 DSMC lenses will be a hybrid cine/stills design. That's all I can say right now.

Still glass rocks!!!!!!!

From the high to the low offer from any brand!

Today or extremely and especially tomorrow you would don't need any cine glass

if you would work with FF35 environment for moving images!!!!!!!!!!

Just make it clear today before all that mess start!!!!!!!!!!!

Breathing and speed about just FORGET!!!

These are all the products of a rich, fat and sick "professional" environment(s)

that you would do not need to meet in your whole life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's better to invest in dollies or cranes or simply in better overall life during production for a crew and cast....GREAT...:couch::head_explode:

but not so in that "bloody" glass when after ALL you realize that was not need about that at ALL.....

Or simply take your own RED1 with a bit more mount options... and do the experiments by yourself...

Nobody minds waiting, Jim. Keep it up!

The right steel the right, the real can be different. And maybe wrong. I think you know what I mean.
