When shopping for a new lens set, make sure you consider the following:

EPIC 5K is accomplished with a 32mm image circle. The new RED Pro Primes are designed to accommodate that. Those lenses that only do a 30mm image circle (standard S35) will only cover 4K on the new EPIC S35 brain.

Something to keep in mind.

A completely unrelated question, but if all lenses create image circles, then why are sensors rectangular?

WE WANT LENSES...WE WANT LENSES...WE WANT LENSES.
I definitly get a red set too, optically i guess they will perform very nice.

Jim, also bit unrelated question. Is it possible that RED announced the specifications of the Epic X brain mount before the camera is released?

For all sorts of reason some of us will not be able to switch from the existing lens/mount system immediately to the new RED lenses. Consequently, this will mean some of us will not be able to upgrade R1 to Epic X before the new mounts are available. Taking into account how long it has taken to get 3rd party mounts for R1 it comes in mind that perhaps the transition time could be minimized if the specs are announced to the 3rd parties well in advance.

Might be obvious but just checking...

Just wondering...is that the same for the Scarlet S35?Since both the S35's can do 5k...Epic and Scarlet..

thanks :)

If you would like to shopping the best still prime lens set optically and mechanically

(for Leica - M cameras..., 15, 18, 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 50, 75, 90)

it costs about € 37.320,00 that's included 20% taxes in Austria.

Also that means you would have "appropriate" mount (!!!) to get Leica - M on your 5K "upgraded" RED1

or you would have EPIC FF35... with Leica -M mount installed...!!???

Here we go:

- Zeiss Distagon T* f/2,8/15mm ZM - € 3.690,00

- Zeiss Distagon T* 4,0/18mm ZM - € 1.140,00

- Leica Summilux-M f/1.4/21mm ASPH. - € 4.980,00

- Leica Summilux-M f/1.4/24mm ASPH. - € 4.980,00

- Leica Summicron-M f/2.0/28mm ASPH. 6-Bit - € 3.100,00

- Leica Summilux-M f/1.4/35mm ASPH. 6-Bit - € 3.300,00

- Leica Noctilux-M f/0.95/50mm ASPH. - € 7.980,00

- Leica Apo-Summicron-M f/2.0/75mm ASPH 6-Bit - € 2.550,00

- Leica Apo-Summicron-M f/2.0/90mm ASPH 6-Bit - € 2.800,00

Total price: € 37.320,00 (+20% taxes included).

Happy shopping!!!!

That is some pricey still glass. The question is, what is the difference between Zeiss and Leica. I went from using Nikon still glass to Zeiss ZF and there was a huge difference mechanically and some difference optically. I'm looking forward to the lenses that Red is going to come out with for the FF35 Epic, especially if they are going to be on the same level as the new Red primes.

Just a question, maybe stupid. if I mount a lense focal 25mm with a 32mm immage circle, on a standard S35 (as the RED ONE) the focal I will get it's something like 28-30? A little bit like using a 25mm with a 30mm immage circle on a 2K sensor and get something like a 50mm?

Andrea

Hi Jim,

Does this mean that when people want to shoot S35, with anything other than Red lenses, they will likely have to crop from 5k, given that the crop from 5k to 4k is likely to be much larger than the 2mm circle of coverage difference?

Isn't that just adding more post production because people are having to crop their footage if they shoot with S35 lenses other than Red's? Thus creating a reason for people to bad mouth the camera when they are shooting with it? Example: "Why did they make the sensor larger than S35? Now we're seeing vingetting on our monitoring and the editor's pissed because he is having to resize everything in post!"

Would it not be worth having a normal S35mm setting on the camera (4.8k or whatever) for lenses that resolve the 30mm circle and having a S35mm+ setting for Red lenses?

Thanks
Paul

hahaha!!!

Just like the pink DSMC... which I heard would cost you an additional 80k for the special order!

anyone else interested in a holga lens rehousing? it'll also cover the epic 645 format :)

Holga is a part of Lomography.com and has also the red series of cameras that cover 120 Medium Format Film.

Paul, if I recall correctly Epic is going to have a custom crop function. Meaning you can crop the sensor to any desired format.

Hans

Excuse me if this is stated elsewhere, but what is the image circle of the older non 'pro' marked RED lenses like the 18-50mm? Are they standard S35 lenses, ie 30mm?
Given that the best guess as to their origins is that they are rehoused still lenses, probably they will cover FF35 which means they will work just fine on Epic's 32mm image circle.
