Lens focal length data readable off camera?

So... odd question... We're trying to develop a distance tracking algorithm and one of the avenues we're looking into is using zoom focal length data (50mm, 130mm.. etc) as the variable that we use to compute accurate distance measurement. Since Red cameras imbed the focal length into the metadata of .r3d files, we were wondering if they route that data to one of the external jacks on any of their modules?

My guess is no (unless the data is imbedded in the lanc signal) because no one would really need that single bit of information off camera.. but it doesn't hurt to ask the experts..

If only you had someone on staff who could answer this type of question. I might know somebody who knows the answer, but he's going to want a hefty salary increase over his last position.

Serial port can subscribe to the focal length yes.
